Travel Guide

The Balearic Islands are a Spanish archipelago in the western Mediterranean, sitting 200km off the Valencia coast and a 2hr 15min flight from London. The four inhabited islands — Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera — total 4,992 km² and welcome around 18 million visitors a year, the majority of them British, German and Scandinavian. Each island has a distinct identity: Mallorca pairs the Tramuntana mountains with Palma's Gothic cathedral; Menorca holds 216km of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve coastline and the prehistoric talayot sites; Ibiza balances world-famous club nights with the limestone monolith of Es Vedrà; Formentera is the car-light, posidonia-meadow escape only reached by ferry. UK travellers come for the short flight, the euro pricing, the breadth of all-inclusive inventory and a summer climate that delivers reliable 28–30°C beach weather from June to September.

✨ Why Visit the Balearic Islands

  • Four distinct islands within one short flight — switch between Mallorca's mountains, Menorca's coves, Ibiza's clubs and Formentera's posidonia waters in a single trip.
  • 216km of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve coastline in Menorca alone — protected since 1993, with the Camí de Cavalls coast path circling the entire island.
  • Europe's deepest summer all-inclusive market — Magaluf, Alcúdia, Cala d'Or and Santa Ponsa run hundreds of UK-aimed AI hotels.
  • The Tramuntana mountains in Mallorca — UNESCO World Heritage since 2011, peaking at Puig Major (1,445m), the highest point in the Balearics.
  • Ibiza's superclubs — Pacha (since 1973), Amnesia, Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza together draw around 2 million club-goers each summer.
  • Direct flights from over 25 UK airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate dense year-round and seasonal schedules into Palma (PMI), Ibiza (IBZ) and Mahón (MAH).

🌴 What Makes the Balearic Islands Special

Unlike the Canary Islands, which trade on year-round winter sun and volcanic landscapes, the Balearics are a Mediterranean summer destination — peak season runs May to October, and the islands largely stand down in winter. Unlike mainland Spain's Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca, the four islands together deliver real geographical variety in a 90-minute hop: a mountain hike in Sóller in the morning, a club day at Ushuaïa the next afternoon, a posidonia swim off Formentera the day after. And unlike the Greek islands, where ferry logistics dominate, the Balearics are unusually simple — direct UK flights into all three main islands, plus high-frequency Trasmapi and Baleària ferries linking Ibiza to Formentera in 30 minutes.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Mallorca — The largest island at 3,640 km², home to Palma's 14th-century Gothic cathedral, the Tramuntana mountain range, the Sóller train and resort towns from Magaluf to Cala d'Or.
  • Menorca — A 696 km² UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, prized for its 120+ named coves, Mahón's deep harbour and the prehistoric talayot civilisation sites.
  • Ibiza — 572 km² of cliff-edged limestone, with Dalt Vila's UNESCO old town, the superclub strip in San Antonio and Playa d'en Bossa, and the offshore monolith of Es Vedrà.
  • Formentera — The smallest at 84 km², reached only by ferry from Ibiza; Playa de Ses Illetes regularly tops European beach polls for its posidonia-protected turquoise water.
  • Cabrera — A protected national park archipelago south of Mallorca, accessible only by permitted boat trip from Colònia de Sant Jordi.

A four-island archipelago with separate personalities — Mallorca for mountains, Menorca for coves, Ibiza for clubs, Formentera for posidonia waters.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

The Balearics — particularly Mallorca's Magaluf, Alcúdia, Santa Ponsa and Cala d'Or — run one of Europe's deepest UK-aimed all-inclusive markets. Iberostar Cala Millor, BH Mallorca (adults-only), Universal Hotel Romántica (Alcúdia) and Iberostar Royal Cristina lead the family AI rankings. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £349pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

Mallorca and Menorca dominate the family market. Iberostar Albufera Park (Alcúdia, Mallorca) sits beside the 4km Playa de Muro. Hotel Sol Falcó (Cala'n Bosch, Menorca) runs themed pools and a kids' club with English-speaking staff. Pair with the Sóller train, the Palma Aquarium (one of Europe's largest with a 3.5-million-litre shark tank) and the Hippodrome trotting races at Mahón for variety.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Belmond La Residencia in Deià (Mallorca) — a 17th-century manor in the Tramuntana mountains, frequented by royalty and rock stars — is the headline Balearic five-star. Cap Rocat (Mallorca), a converted military fortress on Palma Bay, holds Leading Hotels of the World status. Six Senses Ibiza in the north of Ibiza opened in 2021 as the island's first true wellness five-star. Cap Vermell Grand Hotel (Canyamel, Mallorca) rounds out the luxury beach inventory.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Late discounts are uncommon during July–August, when Spanish, German and British peak demand fills the islands almost completely. The strongest savings appear in mid-May to early June and from late September into mid-October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Iberostar, Hipotels and Universal properties. Ibiza closes most clubs and hotels from late October to late April, so true winter deals are limited there.

📅 Best Time to Visit the Balearic Islands

The Balearics are a true Mediterranean summer destination, not a year-round one. Peak season runs late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and almost guaranteed dry, sunny days. Late May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 24–28°C, with fewer crowds and lower hotel rates. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and remain pleasant for walking and town breaks but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). Winter in the Balearics is mild but quiet — many resort hotels close from November to March, particularly in Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Iberostar Albufera Park (Alcúdia, Mallorca), Hotel Sol Falcó (Cala'n Bosch, Menorca)
  • Couples: Belmond La Residencia (Deià, Mallorca), Six Senses Ibiza (Cala Xarraca, Ibiza)
  • Luxury travellers: Cap Rocat (Mallorca), Cap Vermell Grand Hotel (Mallorca), Six Senses Ibiza
  • Nightlife & first-timers: Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza (Playa d'en Bossa), BH Mallorca (Magaluf, adults-only)
  • Walkers & culture lovers: Hotel Esplendido (Port de Sóller, Mallorca), Hotel Can Faustino (Ciutadella, Menorca)

🚗 Getting Around

Each main island has a hire-car-friendly road network — Cicar, Record Go and OK Mobility rent from around €25 a day in Mallorca and Menorca, slightly higher in Ibiza in peak summer. Public buses (TIB in Mallorca, TMSA in Menorca, Ibibus in Ibiza) cover most resort-to-airport routes for €5–8. Inter-island travel is straightforward: Baleària and Trasmediterránea run regular Mallorca–Ibiza ferries (2hr 15min, from €40 single) and Mallorca–Menorca crossings (1hr 30min). Trasmapi runs the Ibiza–Formentera ferry every 30 minutes in summer (around €25 single). The Sóller Train in Mallorca, opened 1912, runs an antique wooden service from Palma into the Tramuntana for around €25 return.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics use Central European Time — one hour ahead of the UK year-round.
  • Spanish IVA at 21% applies here, unlike the 7% IGIC of the Canaries — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised on Mallorca and Ibiza; locals drink bottled.
  • Mallorca and Ibiza now charge a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
  • Ibiza and Formentera car hire books out months ahead in July and August — reserve at the same time as flights.
  • The Ibiza–Formentera ferry queue at Ibiza Town can take an hour at midday in August; travel before 10am or after 5pm.
  • Restaurants in Spain typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead in resort hotspots.
