Travel Guide

Cancún sits at the northeastern tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo state, approximately 10 hours by air from London. The city divides into two distinct zones: the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera), a 26km barrier island strip of large beachfront resorts facing the Caribbean Sea, and Ciudad Cancún, the working Mexican city inland where residents live, eat and shop largely independently of the tourist strip. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the world's second largest at 1,000km — runs the full length of the coast, putting world-class snorkelling and diving within swimming distance of most hotels. Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Cobá are all within 180km. The climate is tropical Caribbean: warm year-round at 26–33°C, with a dry season from November to April aligning with peak UK demand and a wet season from June to October that includes hurricane risk. Flights from the UK operate directly from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham with TUI, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and easyJet. Cancún anchors one of the world's strongest all-inclusive holiday markets, with a resort inventory that rivals Sharm el-Sheikh or Punta Cana for scale and competitive pricing.

✨ Why Visit Cancún

  • The Caribbean's most accessible white-sand beaches from the UK — Playa Delfines, Playa Tortugas and the Hotel Zone's 26km of powdery white sand face genuinely turquoise Caribbean water at 10 hours' flying time.
  • World-class snorkelling and diving on the Mesoamerican Reef — the second-largest coral reef system on earth runs directly offshore; dive sites including the MUSA Underwater Museum and the Manchones Reef off Isla Mujeres are within 30 minutes by boat.
  • Two UNESCO Maya sites within a day-trip radius — Chichén Itzá (180km) and Tulum's clifftop ruins (130km) are both reachable as organised day trips from any Hotel Zone resort.
  • All-inclusive value that rivals the Mediterranean at similar cost — the Hotel Zone's resort inventory — from the Moon Palace to the Iberostar Selection Cancún — offers comparable quality to Turkish or Egyptian all-inclusive at broadly similar package prices with direct UK flights.
  • Cenote swimming unlike anywhere else on earth — the Yucatán Peninsula sits above 6,000+ freshwater sinkholes fed by an underground river network; Cenote Ik Kil and Dos Ojos are among the most spectacular natural swimming experiences in the Western Hemisphere.
  • A genuine Mexican city five minutes from the resort strip — Ciudad Cancún's Mercado 28, street taco stalls and local bus network offer an authentic counterpoint to all-inclusive life that most Caribbean island resorts cannot provide.

🌴 What Makes It Special

Unlike Punta Cana or Jamaica, Cancún is not a resort island — it sits on the Mexican mainland with an entire country and a world-class archaeological heritage immediately accessible by road. Unlike the Riviera Maya's boutique hotel corridor to the south, Cancún's Hotel Zone delivers large-scale all-inclusive infrastructure at a price point and with a flight frequency that works for the mainstream UK family market. Unlike Sharm el-Sheikh or Hurghada, the Caribbean reef here is more biodiverse, the cenotes are unique to this geology and the Maya ruins add a cultural dimension that Egyptian resorts cannot match. The combination of Caribbean beach, reef diving, cenote swimming and Maya archaeology within a 180km radius is found nowhere else.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) — the 26km barrier island with the main resort hotels, beach clubs and the Nichupté Lagoon on the inland side; the centre of all-inclusive Cancún life.
  • Ciudad Cancún — the working city inland, with Mercado 28, local restaurants, the bus terminal and the authentic Mexican urban experience five minutes from the resort strip.
  • Playa Delfines — the southernmost and largest free public beach on the Hotel Zone, with open Atlantic-facing surf and the famous Cancún photo sign.
  • Isla Mujeres (20 min by ferry) — a car-free island with the calmest swimming water near Cancún, whale shark tours and the best independent seafood restaurants in the area.
  • Puerto Morelos (36km South) — a quiet fishing village directly on the reef with some of the coast's best snorkelling offshore and a relaxed local atmosphere.
  • Chichén Itzá (180km West) — the UNESCO Maya city and New Seven Wonders site; the most significant archaeological day trip from Cancún.
  • Tulum (130km South) — the clifftop coastal Maya ruins and the bohemian beach-and-cenote resort town; the most scenically dramatic day trip on the coast.

From Caribbean reef to jungle cenotes and Maya ruins, Cancún offers more day-trip range than any comparable all-inclusive destination.

🏞️ Nature & Outdoor Activities

  • Kayak the Nichupté Lagoon mangroves (Hotel Zone) — guided 2-hour kayak tours through the lagoon's mangrove channels depart from the Hotel Zone bridge; €30pp, crocodile sightings common at dusk.
  • Kite-surf at Playa Delfines (Hotel Zone South) — the southern Hotel Zone's consistent trade winds make Playa Delfines one of Mexico's best kite-surfing locations; lessons from €60pp for 2 hours.
  • Explore the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (80km South) — a UNESCO wetland of lagoons, mangroves and coral reef south of Tulum; full-day tours from Cancún from €85pp including boat and guide.

🏖️ Beaches

  • Playa Delfines (Hotel Zone South) — the widest and least developed beach on the Hotel Zone, with open surf and the iconic Cancún sign; free public access with car park.
  • Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres — calm, shallow turquoise water on the island's northern tip; consistently ranked among Mexico's finest beaches for families with young children.
  • Playa Tortugas (Hotel Zone North) — the main public beach in the northern Hotel Zone, with calm reef-sheltered water, beach clubs and the MUSA snorkel departure point.
  • Xpu-Ha Beach (100km South) — an undeveloped 2km beach south of Playa del Carmen with reef-sheltered water and a handful of independent beach clubs; a full-day excursion from Cancún.

🍽️ Food & Drink

  • Order Tacos al Pastor (TAH-kohs al pas-TOR) — pork marinated in achiote and pineapple, shaved from a vertical spit onto small corn tortillas with coriander and onion; the defining Mexican street food, €1–2 per taco at Ciudad Cancún's taco stands on Avenida Yaxchilán.
  • Try Ceviche de Camarón — fresh prawn cured in lime juice with tomato, avocado, chilli and coriander; €8–12 at the seafront cevicherías along Isla Mujeres waterfront.
  • Drink Chelada or Michelada — Mexican lager served over ice in a chilled salt-rimmed glass with lime (Chelada) or with lime, Worcestershire and chilli (Michelada); €3–5 at any beach bar.
  • Visit Mercado 28 (Ciudad Cancún) — the local covered market away from the Hotel Zone with Yucatecan home cooking, fresh tortillas and market-stall seafood at a fraction of resort prices.

🎉 Nightlife & Entertainment

  • Coco Bongo (Hotel Zone) — Cancún's most famous entertainment venue, combining acrobatic performances, live tributes and DJ sets in a theatrical multi-level club; entry from €50pp including open bar, open from 22:00.
  • Mandala Beach Club (Hotel Zone) — a daytime beach club that transitions into one of the Hotel Zone's busiest nightlife venues after 22:00; free daytime entry, evening cover charge from €20pp.
  • La Destilería (Hotel Zone) — a serious mezcal and tequila bar with over 150 varieties and a kitchen serving upscale Mexican food; the most sophisticated drinking option on the Hotel Zone strip.
  • Mercado 28 evening food stalls (Ciudad Cancún) — the market's perimeter restaurants open for dinner from 18:00 with live Yucatecan music most evenings; the most authentic and affordable evening out near the resort.

📸 Instagram-Worthy Spots

  • The Cancún sign at Playa Delfines (Hotel Zone South) — the large yellow-and-turquoise destination sign with the Caribbean behind; the most photographed single spot in Cancún; best at sunrise before crowds arrive.
  • El Castillo from the Gran Juego de Pelota (Chichén Itzá, Yucatán) — the 30m pyramid photographed across the Great Ball Court's stone ring at opening time, with no visitors in frame.
  • Cenote Ik Kil from the viewing platform (Yucatán, 175km West) — the circular sinkhole photographed from the rim above, with the hanging vines and waterfall descending to the turquoise pool 40m below.
  • Tulum El Castillo from the beach (Tulum, 130km South) — the Maya temple on its 12m cliff above the Caribbean, photographed from the small beach below at golden hour.

🌟 All-Inclusive Holidays

Cancún is one of the world's premier all-inclusive markets with the Hotel Zone hosting over 150 all-inclusive properties. Moon Palace Cancún (2,400 rooms, private beach), Iberostar Selection Cancún and the Hard Rock Hotel Cancún are among the most consistently booked by UK operators. Expect from £799pp including flights in shoulder season (May or November), rising to £1,400–1,900pp at Christmas and February half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

Cancún is outstanding for families. The Hotel Zone's calm lagoon-side beaches suit young children; the large all-inclusive resorts have dedicated kids' clubs and waterparks; and Xcaret Eco-Park (65km South) provides a full-day family programme. The Isla Mujeres ferry and the Chichén Itzá day trip engage children aged 8 and above. Moon Palace and the Iberostar Paraíso complex are the most family-focused large properties.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Cancún's luxury tier sits at the northern end of the Hotel Zone and in the Riviera Maya's exclusive Mayakoba resort enclave (65km South). The Ritz-Carlton Cancún — on a secluded stretch of Hotel Zone beach with a dive centre and three restaurants — and the St Regis Cancún represent the city's five-star benchmark. For the most exclusive experience, Rosewood Mayakoba sits within a 620-acre ecological reserve south of Cancún with overwater villa suites.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Long-haul capacity to Cancún is committed months ahead by UK operators, making genuine last-minute deals less common than for European destinations. The best late availability surfaces in May and early November — savings of 15–20% within 4 weeks of departure are realistic outside fair weeks. Christmas, February half-term and Easter book out 4–6 months ahead; never leave these periods to chance for transatlantic travel.

📅 Best Time to Visit Cancún

December to April is the dry season and the best time to visit Cancún — average highs of 27–29°C, low humidity, calm Caribbean seas and virtually no rain. January and February are the coolest and least humid months, with hotel rates below the Christmas peak. May and November are excellent shoulder months — still dry, noticeably cheaper and less crowded than peak. June to October is hurricane season; rain arrives primarily as afternoon downpours, but tropical storms can disrupt travel plans and sea conditions. Whale shark season (June–September) and the Chichén Itzá equinox serpent-shadow effect (21 March and 22 September) are wet-season highlights worth planning around.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Moon Palace Cancún, Iberostar Selection Cancún (Hotel Zone)
  • Couples: Excellence Playa Mujeres (north of Cancún), Secrets The Vine Cancún
  • Luxury seekers: Ritz-Carlton Cancún, St Regis Cancún, Rosewood Mayakoba
  • First-timers: Central Hotel Zone between Playa Tortugas and Playa Delfines
  • Budget & local experience: Ciudad Cancún guesthouses near Parque Las Palapas

🚗 Getting Around

Cancún International Airport is 16km south of the Hotel Zone; authorised taxis charge a fixed €15–20 to the Hotel Zone (20 minutes); ADO coaches run to Ciudad Cancún bus terminal for €5pp. Within the Hotel Zone, the R-1 local bus runs the full 26km strip for €1pp and is the most practical way to move between hotels and beaches. ADO coaches connect Cancún to Playa del Carmen (€5pp, 1 hour), Tulum (€8pp, 2 hours) and Mérida (€18pp, 4 hours). Car hire from the airport starts at €30/day; useful for cenote and ruin day trips but unnecessary within the Hotel Zone. Ferries to Isla Mujeres depart Puerto Juárez every 30 minutes (€8pp return, 20 minutes).

💡 Travel Tips

  • Plug type: Mexico uses Type A and B (two flat pins, 127V) — same as the USA. UK adaptors required; verify dual-voltage compatibility on all devices.
  • Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). As of 2025, £1 buys approximately MXN 24. USD is accepted widely but at poor rates; withdraw Pesos at the airport on arrival.
  • Tipping: Essential — budget USD 1–2 per drink at all-inclusive bars, USD 5–10 after a restaurant meal and USD 10–20 for full-day tour guides. Hotel housekeeping: USD 2–3 per day.
  • Tap water: Do not drink tap water anywhere in Mexico — use bottled or purified water exclusively, including for brushing teeth.
  • Sargassum: Floating seaweed affects some Hotel Zone beaches between April and September; the northern Hotel Zone beaches are generally less affected than the southern stretches. Check current conditions before booking a specific hotel.
  • Hurricane season: If travelling June to October, ensure your travel insurance explicitly covers hurricane cancellation and curtailment; check FCDO Mexico travel advice before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

December to April is the dry season and peak period for UK visitors — 27–29°C, low humidity and calm Caribbean seas. January and February offer the best combination of good weather and lower prices outside Christmas. May and November are strong shoulder months. June to October brings afternoon rain and hurricane risk; whale shark season and the Chichén Itzá equinox events are the compensating highlights.
Exceptionally so. The Hotel Zone's calm lagoon-side beaches suit young children; large all-inclusive resorts have dedicated kids' clubs and waterparks; and Xcaret Eco-Park provides a full day of family activity. Isla Mujeres by ferry and the Chichén Itzá day trip engage children aged 8 and above. Moon Palace Cancún is the most comprehensively family-equipped large resort on the strip.
Approximately 10 hours from London Gatwick or Manchester to Cancún International Airport. TUI, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and easyJet operate direct services. The airport is 16km south of the Hotel Zone — taxis take 20 minutes and cost €15–20.
The Mexican Peso (MXN). USD is widely accepted in the Hotel Zone but at unfavourable exchange rates — withdraw Pesos at the airport on arrival. As of 2025, £1 buys approximately MXN 24. Card payments are accepted at all major hotels and restaurants.
No visa is required. UK passport holders receive a free tourist card (FMM) on arrival, valid for up to 180 days. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months' validity beyond your travel dates and retain the FMM card — it must be surrendered on departure.
The all-inclusive model makes resort spending highly predictable. Outside the Hotel Zone, Mexico is excellent value — street tacos €1–2 each, local beer €2–3, ADO coaches €5–8 between towns. Hotel Zone restaurants and international excursion operators price at European levels; using local operators, colectivo minibuses and Ciudad Cancún's Mercado 28 reduces costs significantly.
The central Hotel Zone between Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol gives the best balance of beach quality, transport links for day trips and proximity to the Hotel Zone's restaurants and nightlife. For families prioritising calm water, the northern Hotel Zone near Puerto Juárez and the Isla Mujeres ferry is the better choice. Independent travellers seeking a less resort-intensive experience should consider basing in Playa del Carmen (65km south) and using Cancún as a day trip.
