Travel Guide

Palma Nova is a purpose-built family resort on the south-west coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Calvià, 13km west of Palma and 23km from Palma Airport (PMI). It was earmarked for tourism development as early as 1935 — making it one of the oldest planned resorts on the island — though most construction came in the post-civil-war 1950s and 1960s. Today the resort sits directly between two distinct neighbours: the noisy party hub of Magaluf to the south-west and the polished marina town of Puerto Portals to the north-east. Palma Nova holds three Blue Flag beaches (Es Carregador, Playa de Palma Nova and Son Matías), all linked by a 3km flat promenade lined with shops, cafés and pine trees. UK travellers come for the family-focused calm of Palma Nova itself, with the option to step over into Magaluf's nightlife when they want it — without booking a hotel inside the strip.

✨ Why Visit Palma Nova

  • Three Blue Flag beaches in one resort — Es Carregador (600m, smallest), Playa de Palma Nova (1km, central with a pine-tree shaded back) and Son Matías (1.2km, liveliest).
  • A genuine family-resort calm — calmer than next-door Magaluf but with all the same waterparks, attractions and Marineland on the doorstep.
  • A 3km flat traffic-free seaside promenade — connects the three beaches end-to-end and continues into Magaluf, fully buggy- and wheelchair-friendly.
  • A 23-minute airport transfer — among the shortest in the Mediterranean, with the direct A11 Aerotib bus running from Palma Airport to the resort.
  • Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.
  • The "best of both worlds" location — 20 minutes by bus from Palma's Old Town in one direction, 15 minutes' walk to Magaluf's strip in the other.

🌴 What Makes Palma Nova Special

Unlike Magaluf, where Punta Ballena's nightlife shapes the entire resort identity, Palma Nova was designed and stayed designed as a family destination — the bars are pubs and karaoke venues rather than superclubs, kitchens close by 11pm, and the seafront has dedicated children's playgrounds. Unlike Alcúdia, the island's other major family resort 60km north, Palma Nova has a 23-minute airport transfer rather than 50, putting you on a sunbed faster. And unlike Puerto Portals next door — which trades on €4 million yachts and €40 lunch menus — Palma Nova keeps the price point firmly mid-range, with a pint at €4 and a paella for two at €25. The combination of three calm beaches, a flat promenade, Marineland on the doorstep and easy access to both Palma's culture and Magaluf's nightlife is unique on the south-west coast.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Playa de Palma Nova (central) — The 1km Blue Flag heart of the resort, with the most-photographed seafront, sunbed hire and a floating raft for older kids.
  • Son Matías beach (southern) — A 1.2km livelier stretch closer to Magaluf, with Siso Beach Club, Barbuda Beach Bar and watersports kiosks.
  • Es Carregador (northern) — The 600m smaller cove next to Club Náutico marina, the quietest of the three beaches and best for under-fives.
  • Avinguda de la Platja (Paseo del Mar) — The main commercial spine, with restaurants, Eroski City supermarket and the resort's bus stops.
  • Costa d'en Blanes (north) — A residential headland 2km north, home to Marineland Mallorca and small rocky swimming coves.
  • Puerto Portals (3km north) — The polished celebrity marina with designer boutiques, Cipriani and Tahini Sushi.
  • Magaluf (1km south-west) — Walkable along the seafront promenade in 15 minutes; Punta Ballena, Western Water Park and BCM all within easy reach.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Palma Nova runs a deep family all-inclusive market, with Globales Santa Lucía (Son Matías), Hotel Comodoro Playa and Bahia Principe Coral Playa leading the UK family rankings. Iberostar Royal Cristina (adults-only) and Hotel Agua Beach (adults-only) handle the couples and over-25s segment. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £329pp in May or October, climbing to £899pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

This is exactly what Palma Nova was built for. Three calm Blue Flag beaches with lifeguards, a flat 3km promenade, dedicated playgrounds along the seafront, and Marineland Mallorca, Western Water Park, Katmandu Park and Pirates Adventure all within 15 minutes by bus. Globales Santa Lucía, Sol Palmanova and the Bahia Principe Coral Playa lead the family hotel inventory; Sol Katmandu Park & Resort in Magaluf (15 minutes' walk) adds themed-resort accommodation tied to the upside-down-castle attraction.

💎 Luxury Holidays

True five-star inventory clusters in next-door Puerto Portals (3km north) and Magaluf's regenerated Calvià Beach. Pure Salt Port Adriano (5km west, designed by Philippe Starck) holds the marina-side luxury option. BH Mallorca (adults-only Calvià Beach) sits 15 minutes' walk south. The Castillo Hotel Son Vida above Palma adds the heritage golf-resort option. Within Palma Nova itself, Iberostar Royal Cristina is the leading adults-only property with sea-view rooms over Son Matías beach.

💎 Last-Minute Deals

Palma Nova carries solid late-availability stock outside July and August. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Globales, Bahia Principe and Sol properties. Many hotels close from late October through early April, so winter deals aren't a feature here.

📅 Best Time to Visit Palma Nova

Palma Nova runs as a summer-season family resort, with most hotels and attractions open from late March to early November. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and almost guaranteed sunshine — the best beach window. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C, with cheaper hotel rates and Marineland and the waterparks fully open. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walkers and couples but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperature (17–19°C). The resort largely closes from November through February.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Globales Santa Lucía (Son Matías), Bahia Principe Coral Playa, Sol Palmanova
  • Couples: Iberostar Royal Cristina (adults-only), Hotel Agua Beach (adults-only Playa de Palma Nova)
  • Luxury travellers: Pure Salt Port Adriano (5km west), Castillo Hotel Son Vida (Palma), Hospes Maricel (Cas Català)
  • Budget travellers: Fergus Style Palmanova, Hotel Comodoro Playa, self-catering apartments around Avinguda de la Platja
  • Beach-and-balcony lovers: Hotel Beverly Playa, Bahia Principe Coral Playa — both with direct seafront rooms

🚗 Getting Around

The resort itself is fully walkable — end to end is 25 minutes on foot, and Magaluf's Punta Ballena strip is 15 minutes by promenade. The TIB A11 Aerotib bus runs direct from Palma Airport (PMI) to Palma Nova for €5 in 30 minutes, with TIB lines 104, 105 and 106 connecting on to other south-west Mallorca resorts. EMT bus 104 runs every 30 minutes to Palma's Plaça d'Espanya in 35 minutes for €5. A taxi from PMI to Palma Nova costs around €30 and takes 25 minutes via the Ma-1 motorway. Don't bring a car into the resort itself — parking is limited; hire from PMI for day trips to Sóller or the Tramuntana.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Mallorca's Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills (May to October).
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • Restaurant kitchens typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at The Olive Tree, Siso Beach and Barbuda in summer.
  • The walk from Palma Nova to Magaluf along the promenade is 15 minutes — don't pay for a taxi at busy times.
  • Combined Marineland-and-Western-Water-Park family tickets save around 25% versus individual entry.
  • Buy Pirates Adventure tickets at the venue's own ticket office on Avinguda Pere Vaquer Ramis — hotel-rep prices are typically 15–20% higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Late June to early September is the peak family-beach window, with 28–32°C highs and Marineland, Western Water Park and Katmandu all running at full capacity. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with cheaper hotel rates. The resort largely closes from November to February — don't book a winter Palma Nova trip.
Yes — this is one of Mallorca's strongest family resorts. Three Blue Flag beaches with lifeguards and gradual sand entry, a flat 3km promenade buggy-friendly end-to-end, dedicated children's playgrounds along the seafront, and Marineland Mallorca, Western Water Park and Pirates Adventure all within 15 minutes by bus.
Direct flights to Palma Airport (PMI) take 2 hours 15 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 2 hours 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The transfer to Palma Nova is 25 minutes by taxi (€30) or 30 minutes on the TIB A11 Aerotib bus (€5).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere, with most contactless. Carry small cash for taxi fares, sunbed hire (€4 a set) and pedalo rental (€15 an hour). ATMs are widespread along Avinguda de la Platja.

Palma Nova is mid-priced for the Balearics — broadly similar to Magaluf next door, noticeably cheaper than Puerto Portals. A pint runs €4–5, a three-course dinner with wine averages €25–35pp, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills. All-inclusive packages from £329pp are the strongest family value on the south-west coast.
For a first visit, base near Playa de Palma Nova (the central beach) — you wake up with three Blue Flag beaches in walking distance, the seafront promenade outside your door and the bus to Marineland and Magaluf 5 minutes away. Couples wanting more atmosphere should consider Son Matías at the lively southern end; families with under-fives should choose Es Carregador at the calmer northern end.
