Travel Guide

Ibiza is the third-largest of Spain's Balearic Islands at 572 km², lying 80km off the eastern Spanish coast and 130km south-west of Mallorca. The island has a permanent population of around 165,000, swelling to over 3 million visitors a year. Ibiza pairs two distinct identities — by day it's a UNESCO-listed historic island with a 16th-century walled old town in Dalt Vila, pine-fringed beaches like Cala Comte and Cala Salada, and the mythological 382m sea-monolith of Es Vedrà; by night it's the world's clubbing capital, with Pacha, Amnesia, Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa between them drawing roughly 2 million club-goers each summer. UK travellers come for direct flights from over 25 airports, world-leading nightlife, and an island that genuinely works equally well for clubbing, family beach holidays in Santa Eulalia, and boutique hippy-trail couples in San Juan.

✨ Why Visit Ibiza

  • The world's leading nightlife scene — Pacha (since 1973), Amnesia, Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa Beach Hotel are consistently ranked among the world's top 10 nightclubs.
  • Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Ibiza Town's 16th-century walled old town has been UNESCO-listed since 1999, with Renaissance fortifications and a hilltop cathedral.
  • Eighty named beaches and coves — from the family-friendly Playa d'en Bossa (3km long) to undeveloped pine-fringed coves like Cala Salada and Aguas Blancas.
  • The mythological Es Vedrà sea-monolith — a 382m uninhabited limestone tower 2km off the south-west coast, mythologised in local folklore and one of the island's defining landmarks.
  • Direct ferry to Formentera — Trasmapi and Baleària run 30-minute crossings every half hour from Ibiza port, opening up Europe's most-photographed beach for day trips.
  • Direct UK flights from over 25 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, 2hr 30min from London.

🌴 What Makes Ibiza Special

Unlike Mallorca, where the resort identity tilts firmly towards family beach holidays, Ibiza is shaped by its dual personality — a serious world-class clubbing scene by night, and a genuinely beautiful Mediterranean island by day. Unlike Magaluf, where the nightlife is concentrated in the Punta Ballena strip, Ibiza spreads its big nights across a half-dozen distinct zones (Ibiza Town, Playa d'en Bossa, San Antonio, Sant Rafel) with each catering to a different crowd and music style. Unlike the Greek Cyclades or the Croatian Adriatic islands, Ibiza is genuinely accessible — direct UK flights from 25+ airports, no ferry transfers required, and a 25-minute taxi from the airport to the resort. And unlike Formentera next door, Ibiza has the depth of restaurants, hotels, infrastructure and offshore boat-trip variety to fill a fortnight without repetition.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Ibiza Town (Eivissa) & Dalt Vila — The capital and UNESCO walled old town, with the Marina Botafoch terraces, Carrer de la Verge gay village and the historic harbour.
  • Playa d'en Bossa — The 3km southern beach strip, home to Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa Beach Hotel and the densest concentration of beach clubs.
  • San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany) — The sunset-facing west-coast town, with Café del Mar, Café Mambo and the West End bar strip for under-25s.
  • Santa Eulalia (Santa Eulària des Riu) — The family-friendly east-coast resort with the only river on the island and a calmer 750m beach.
  • San Juan (Sant Joan de Labritja) — The hippy-trail north of the island, with Aguas Blancas beach, the Las Dalias Saturday hippy market and boutique agroturismo finca-hotels.
  • San Josep (Sant Josep de sa Talaia) — The south-west municipality covering Es Vedrà, Cala d'Hort, Cala Comte and Cala Salada, the island's most spectacular coastline.
  • Es Canar & Punta Arabí — A small east-coast resort with the Wednesday Punta Arabí Hippy Market, the island's longest-running.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Ibiza's AI market is smaller than Mallorca's but still substantial, with Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza, Insotel Tarida Beach Resort (Cala Tarida) and Sirenis Hotel Club Aura (Port d'es Torrent) leading the UK family rankings. Hotel Garbi Ibiza & Spa (Playa d'en Bossa) is the long-standing UK-favourite mid-tier AI. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £429pp in May or October, climbing to £1,099pp at August half-term — comfortably above Mallorca but reflecting Ibiza's broader cost base.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

Santa Eulalia is the family base of choice — a calmer east-coast resort with a 750m beach, a riverside promenade and Insotel Hotel Tarida Playa Suites & Spa. Cala Tarida and Es Canar also work well for under-12s. Avoid Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio's West End if you have children. The Wednesday Punta Arabí Hippy Market, Cala Bassa Beach Club kids' programme and the daily Aguamar Water Park (Playa d'en Bossa) cover the family-attraction calendar.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Six Senses Ibiza in the north (Cala Xarraca) opened in 2021 as the island's first true wellness five-star, with a Reception of the Senses spa and 116 sea-view rooms. OD Ocean Drive (Marina Botafoch, Ibiza Town) and Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay (adults-only Talamanca) cater to the design-led couples market. Atzaró Agroturismo in the north is the headline boutique-finca address. Ushuaïa Beach Hotel itself is part-luxury, part-clubbing in Playa d'en Bossa.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Late discounts are uncommon during the May-to-October club season, when the residency calendar drives full hotel inventory. The strongest savings appear in mid-May to early June and from late September into early October — discounts of 20–25% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Insotel, Hard Rock and Sirenis properties. Almost every hotel and most clubs close from late October to late April; true winter deals are limited.

📅 Best Time to Visit Ibiza

Ibiza is shaped by its summer-only club season. May to October is the headline window: clubs open Memorial Day (late May) and close on closing parties in mid-October. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the residency calendar at full capacity. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper flights and hotels. April and late October still deliver 19–23°C, but most clubs and many hotels are closed. The island is genuinely quiet from November to April — perfect for boutique-finca couples, harder for first-timers.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Insotel Hotel Tarida Playa Suites & Spa (Cala Tarida), Insotel Club Tarida (family AI)
  • Couples: Six Senses Ibiza (Cala Xarraca), Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay (adults-only Talamanca), Atzaró Agroturismo (north)
  • Luxury travellers: Six Senses Ibiza, Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, OD Ocean Drive (Marina Botafoch)
  • Clubbers & first-timers: Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza (Playa d'en Bossa), Ushuaïa Tower (adults-only)
  • Hippy-trail travellers: Atzaró Agroturismo, Casa Maca (San Joan), Aguas de Ibiza (Santa Eulalia)

🚗 Getting Around

A hire car is the most flexible option for exploring Ibiza properly — Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent from around €40 a day at Ibiza Airport (IBZ), rising to €100+ in peak August. Public buses are frequent on the main resort routes for €2–5; the L9 line connects the airport to Ibiza Town and Playa d'en Bossa for €4. A taxi from IBZ to Ibiza Town takes 10 minutes (€15), to San Antonio 25 minutes (€30), to Santa Eulalia 30 minutes (€35). The Discobus runs an all-night service between the main clubs, San Antonio and Ibiza Town in summer for €4 single — the safest way to club-hop. Trasmapi and Baleària run the Ibiza-Formentera ferry every 30 minutes in summer (€25 single, 30 minutes).

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Ibiza charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled almost exclusively.
  • Club entry runs €30–80 with one drink — buy through official outlets like Ibiza Spotlight, not street touts.
  • Beach clubs (Ushuaïa, Cotton Beach Club, Cala Bassa) require advance reservation in summer for sunbeds.
  • The Discobus is the cheapest and safest way home from clubs — €4 single, runs until 6am.
  • Restaurants in Ibiza Town's Marina Botafoch typically don't fill until 10pm — book ahead in summer.
  • Ibiza-Formentera ferry queues at Ibiza Town can take 90 minutes at midday in August; travel before 10am or after 5pm.
  • Hire a car if you want to explore Cala d'Hort, San Joan or the north — public buses don't reach the smaller coves.

Yes, but only in specific areas — Santa Eulalia and Cala Tarida are the family-base bedrock, both calm east-coast or south-coast resorts with gradually-shelving beaches and family AI hotels. Avoid Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio's West End with children. Aguamar Water Park, the Wednesday Punta Arabí Hippy Market and boat trips to Es Vedrà fill family days.
Direct flights to Ibiza Airport (IBZ) take 2 hours 30 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 3 hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow. easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate from over 25 UK airports during the May-to-October season.
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere, with most clubs, beach clubs and bars taking contactless. Carry small cash for taxis, street vendors and the hippy markets at Las Dalias and Punta Arabí. ATMs are widespread; airport exchange-counter rates are usually poor.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Ibiza is one of the more expensive Balearic destinations — typically 25–40% above Mallorca on hotels and beach-club spends. A pint runs €6–8 in Ibiza Town, a three-course dinner with wine averages €40–60pp, club entry is €30–80, and beach-club sunbeds cost €25–60 a day. Hire-a-scooter from €25 a day is the cheapest way to get around.
For a first visit, Ibiza Town (Eivissa) delivers the best base — you have Dalt Vila on your doorstep, Marina Botafoch's restaurant scene 5 minutes by water taxi, Pacha and Hï Ibiza both within easy reach, and direct ferries to Formentera. Clubbers should consider Playa d'en Bossa, families Santa Eulalia, and couples wanting the hippy-trail side San Joan in the north.
