Travel Guide
Magaluf is a purpose-built holiday resort on the south-west coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Calvià, 17km west of Palma and 25 minutes by taxi from Palma Airport (PMI). It grew from a small fishing settlement into one of Europe's largest package-holiday destinations from the 1970s onwards, and today welcomes around 1.2 million visitors a year — the majority British. The resort wraps around a 1.6km Blue Flag beach with the Punta Ballena nightlife strip running parallel inland. A €380m municipal regeneration plan launched in 2015 by Calvià Town Hall and Meliá Hotels International has demolished the worst high-rise blocks, added a new seafront promenade and pulled in five-star Calvià Beach properties alongside the long-standing party hotels. UK travellers come here for the cheapest summer flights, the densest concentration of clubs in the Mediterranean and a 1.6km gradually-shelving beach that genuinely works for families during the day.
✨ Why Visit Magaluf
- Mallorca's most concentrated nightlife — the 1.2km Punta Ballena strip holds over 100 bars and clubs, including BCM Planet Dance, the largest nightclub on the island.
- A 1.6km Blue Flag beach — fine white sand and gradually-shelving water that still works for families during the day, with sunbeds from €4.
- Europe's looping waterslide — Western Water Park's "Beast" was the first looping waterslide in Europe and remains the resort's headline ride.
- Two-tier resort experience — the Punta Ballena party strip and the polished Calvià Beach quarter (with Nikki Beach Mallorca, BH Mallorca and Sol House) operate effectively as two separate resorts within the same bay.
- Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.
- A 25-minute airport transfer — among the shortest in the Mediterranean, getting you on a sunbed before your suitcase has stopped spinning.
🌴 What Makes Magaluf Special
Unlike Ibiza, where club entry typically costs €60–80 and drinks €15+, Magaluf runs on volume — €40 club passes, €3–4 pints, and bar terraces packed from midnight to 6am. Unlike Benidorm or the Costa del Sol's mainland-Spain equivalents, Magaluf benefits from being on a Balearic island with a 25-minute airport transfer and a genuinely good 1.6km beach. And unlike its long-time reputation, the resort has been actively reinventing itself — BH Mallorca shifted from party hotel to family-friendly five-star, Nikki Beach and Calvià Beach now sit at the upmarket end of the bay, and several adults-only properties cap occupancy at 18+ to filter out the rowdier end of the market. The result is one resort with two clear personalities: choose your hotel zone carefully and you can have either holiday.
📍 Key Areas to Explore

- Magaluf Beach (Playa de Magaluf) — A 1.6km white-sand Blue Flag beach with sunbed hire, watersports kiosks and a flat seafront promenade.
- Calvià Beach — The polished eastern end of the resort, home to Nikki Beach Mallorca, BH Mallorca, Sol House and the regenerated five-star strip.
- BCM Square — The square anchored by Mallorca's biggest superclub and the surrounding Hotel Samos and Sol House cluster.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays
Magaluf runs one of Europe's deepest UK all-inclusive markets. Sol House The Studio, Hotel Samos and Sol Barbados lead the under-25s and stag/hen rankings, while BH Mallorca (now adults-only and family-friendly rather than its old party identity) and Hipotels Mediterraneo Park sit at the upmarket end. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £279pp in May or October, climbing to £899pp at August half-term.
👨👩👧👦 Family Holidays
Magaluf works for families in two specific scenarios — base on the eastern Calvià Beach end (away from Punta Ballena), or stay across the bay in Palma Nova. Hipotels Mediterraneo Park (Calvià Beach), Globales Palmanova Palace and the Sol Katmandu Park & Resort (themed around an upside-down castle, with kids' clubs and an in-house mini-golf course) are the strongest family bases. Avoid the Hotel Samos and Sol House cluster around BCM Square.
💎 Luxury Holidays
The 2015 regeneration brought genuine luxury to Calvià Beach. BH Mallorca is the headline adults-only five-star, with three pools and Nikki Beach access. Pure Salt Port Adriano in next-door Port Adriano (5km west) — designed by Philippe Starck — adds the marina-side luxury option, while Iberostar Royal Cristina (in nearby Palma Nova) holds Iberostar's flagship adults-only inventory. For the headline Mallorca five-star, Cap Rocat is 25 minutes east in Cala Blava.
⏰ Last-Minute Deals
Magaluf carries the strongest late-availability stock of any Mediterranean resort. The Punta Ballena strip is closed November to February (most clubs reopen end of March), so winter inventory is limited. Mid-May to early June and from mid-September into October are the strongest discount windows — discounts of 25–35% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Sol, Hipotels, Globales and Universal properties. Stag/hen group deals run year-round through the open season.

📅 Best Time to Visit Magaluf
Magaluf runs as a summer-season resort — the Punta Ballena strip closes from November to February and reopens at the end of March. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the clubs running at full capacity from midnight to 6am. May and September are the value-strong months at 23–27°C, with cheaper hotels but most clubs and bars still open. April and October are cooler shoulder months at 19–23°C — the beach works, but expect partial bar and club opening. The resort effectively shuts down from November through February, with most hotels closed.
🏨 Where to Stay
- Families: Hipotels Mediterraneo Park (Calvià Beach), Sol Katmandu Park & Resort, Globales Palmanova Palace
- Couples: BH Mallorca (adults-only, Calvià Beach), Hotel Roc Marbella Park, Pure Salt Port Adriano (5km west)
- Luxury travellers: BH Mallorca, Pure Salt Port Adriano, Cap Rocat (Cala Blava, 25 min east)
- First-timers & nightlife: Sol House The Studio (BCM Square), Hotel Samos, Hotel Sotavento
- Stag & hen groups: Hotel Samos, Sol House The Studio, Sol Barbados — all walking distance to Punta Ballena
🚗 Getting Around
The resort itself is fully walkable — end to end is 25 minutes on foot, and Punta Ballena to the beach is 5 minutes. Bus line 104 runs every 30 minutes from Magaluf to Palma's Plaça d'Espanya in 35 minutes for €5, with line 107 connecting directly to Palma Airport (PMI) in 30 minutes for around €5.50. A taxi from PMI to Magaluf costs around €30 and takes 25 minutes via the Ma-1 motorway. Drive into Palma's Old Town only if you have to — parking is scarce. For day trips to the Tramuntana mountains or Alcúdia, hire a car from Cicar or Record Go from around €25 a day.
💡 Travel Tips
- The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
- IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
- Mallorca's Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills (May to October).
- Many Magaluf hotels charge a returnable €50pp room deposit at check-in to cover damages — pay by card and you'll get it back at checkout.
- Punta Ballena drinks have no UK-style measure rules — single shots are typically much larger, so pace yourself.
- Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
- Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
- Local police strictly enforce the 2014 by-laws against drinking on the street outside Punta Ballena — keep alcohol to bars, beaches and your hotel.
- Black Lizard Island is a 400m swim — only attempt it as a strong swimmer or hire a pedalo (€15/hour).
- Friday and Saturday taxi waits at Punta Ballena can hit 90 minutes after 3am — pre-book for the airport.
