Travel Guide

Mykonos is a Greek island in the Cyclades, sitting in the central Aegean Sea, 153km south-east of Athens. The island covers 105 km² with a permanent population of just 12,000 — swelling to over 50,000 in peak August. Mykonos Town (Chora) wraps the western coast, with whitewashed cubic Cycladic houses, 365 small churches and the iconic 16th-century Venetian-built Kato Mili windmill row above Little Venice. From the 1960s onwards Mykonos became one of Europe's earliest jet-set destinations — drawing Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly — and has since established itself as the Mediterranean's leading party-and-fashion island, with Cavo Paradiso (since 1993) hosting world-name DJs each summer. UK travellers come for direct seasonal flights from May to October, the Cycladic architecture, the southern beach-club scene at Paradise and Super Paradise and the densest concentration of five-star inventory in the Greek islands.

✨ Why Visit Mykonos

  • The headline Cycladic island — the most-photographed Greek island after Santorini, with whitewashed Mykonos Town, the Kato Mili windmills and Little Venice.
  • The 16th-century Kato Mili windmill row — five Venetian-built whitewashed windmills lining a hill above Little Venice, the island's defining landmark.
  • Cavo Paradiso superclub — opened in 1993 above Paradise Beach, hosting Tale of Us, David Guetta, Adam Beyer and Black Coffee residencies through summer.
  • The 1990 UNESCO Delos archaeological site — the mythological birthplace of Apollo, a 30-minute ferry from Mykonos Town's old port.
  • The densest five-star inventory in the Greek islands — Mykonos holds Belvedere, Bill & Coo, Cavo Tagoo and Santa Marina among its luxury anchors.
  • Direct seasonal UK flights — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from May to October, 4 hours from London Gatwick to Mykonos Airport (JMK).

🌴 What Makes Mykonos Special

Unlike Santorini — its closest Cycladic rival — Mykonos delivers a flatter, more practical island with proper sandy beaches, Cavo Paradiso superclub and significantly more polished restaurant inventory. Unlike Ibiza, Mykonos pairs its world-class clubbing with Cycladic architecture, UNESCO Delos archaeology and a pace that's calmer outside the southern beach strip. And unlike anywhere else in the Greek islands, Mykonos has built itself into an international fashion-and-luxury hub — Louis Vuitton, Dior, Bvlgari and Prada all run seasonal pop-up boutiques in Mykonos Town from May to October. The combination of windmills, Little Venice, Paradise/Super Paradise beach clubs and the densest five-star inventory in the Cyclades makes Mykonos the most polished Greek island for couples and luxury travellers.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Mykonos Town (Chora) — The whitewashed cubic Cycladic capital, with Little Venice, the Kato Mili windmills, the Paraportiani Church and the Old Port.
  • Little Venice (Alefkandra) — The 18th-century row of overhanging seafront houses with the headline sunset bars.
  • Kato Mili — The five 16th-century Venetian windmills above Little Venice, the island's defining landmark.
  • Old Port — The historic harbour for Delos ferries, fishing boats and the famous Petros the Pelican (the town's mascot).
  • New Port (Tourlos) — 2km north of Old Port; cruise ships and inter-island ferries dock here.
  • Paradise Beach — A 7km southern beach with Paradise Beach Club daytime DJ scene and the cliff-top Cavo Paradiso superclub above.
  • Super Paradise — The neighbouring southern beach with the Super Paradise Beach Club, popular with the LGBTQ+ scene.
  • Elia Beach — The longest sandy southern beach at 800m, calmer and family-aimed.
  • Ornos & Platis Gialos (south) — Calmer family-aimed beach resorts with shorter transfers from the airport.
  • Agios Sostis (north) — An undeveloped sandy beach with no sunbeds, popular with travellers seeking quiet.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Mykonos's AI market is small and boutique-led — the island leans toward design hotels, half-board boutique stays and self-catering villas rather than mass-market AI. Hotel Mykonian Mare, Petinos Beach Hotel (Platis Gialos) and Hotel Tagoo (adults-only) lead the polished half-board rankings. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £499pp in May or October, climbing to £1,499pp at August half-term — comfortably above Crete and Rhodes for the same nights.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

Mykonos is a mixed picture for families. Mykonos Town centre and the southern beach-club scene at Paradise and Super Paradise are unsuitable for under-12s, but Ornos and Platis Gialos on the south coast deliver calmer family bases. Petinos Beach Hotel (Platis Gialos) and Anatolia Hotel (Mykonos Town) lead the family inventory. For pure family-resort experiences, base in Crete or Rhodes instead. Pair Mykonos with the Delos UNESCO day trip and family-friendly Elia Beach for older children.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Mykonos holds the densest luxury inventory in the Greek islands. Belvedere Hotel (Mykonos Town, with Mykonos's only Nobu Matsuhisa restaurant), Cavo Tagoo (cliff-side, with the famous infinity pool), Santa Marina Resort (Ornos Bay, Marriott Luxury Collection) and Bill & Coo Suites & Lounge (Megali Ammos, adults-only) are the headline five-stars. Kalesma Mykonos (Ornos), Kensho Psarou (Psarou Beach) and Mykonos Riviera (Tourlos) round out the upper-tier inventory. The yacht-charter scene from the New Port delivers the headline luxury experience.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Late discounts are uncommon during the May-to-October club season, when the residency calendar drives full hotel inventory at premium rates. The strongest savings appear in mid-May to early June and from late September into early October — discounts of 15–25% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Petinos Beach, Mykonian Mare and similar four-star properties. Almost every Mykonos hotel and most clubs close from late October to late April; true winter deals are limited to a small core of Mykonos Town heritage hotels.

📅 Best Time to Visit Mykonos

Mykonos runs as a summer-only resort, with most hotels and clubs open from late April to early November. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 24–26°C, the Cavo Paradiso residency calendar at full capacity and hotel rates at premium. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper flights and hotels and most clubs still open. April and late October still deliver 19–23°C, but most clubs and many hotels are closed. The island is genuinely quiet from November to April — a small core of Mykonos Town restaurants and heritage hotels stays open. The Meltemi north wind blows strongly from mid-July to August — pack windbreakers.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Petinos Beach Hotel (Platis Gialos), Anatolia Hotel (Mykonos Town)
  • Couples: Bill & Coo Suites & Lounge (Megali Ammos, adults-only), Kensho Psarou (Psarou Beach, adults-only)
  • Luxury travellers: Belvedere Hotel, Cavo Tagoo, Santa Marina Resort (Ornos Bay), Kalesma Mykonos
  • Clubbers & first-timers: Hotel Tagoo, Mykonos Theoxenia (Old Town)
  • Quieter & northern travellers: Mykonos Riviera (Tourlos), Royal Myconian Resort (Elia Beach)

🚗 Getting Around

A hire car or scooter is useful for exploring the southern beaches but unnecessary if you're staying in Mykonos Town. Cars from Sixt and Drive Rent-a-Car at Mykonos Airport (JMK) start at €40 a day in shoulder season, rising to €120+ in peak August; ATVs (quad bikes) are popular at €30–50 a day. Public buses run from Mykonos Town's two stations — Fabrika (south station) for Paradise, Super Paradise, Elia and Platis Gialos beaches, and the Old Port for Tourlos and Ano Mera; €2.20 single, every 30 minutes in summer. A taxi from JMK to Mykonos Town takes 10 minutes (€20–25); Mykonos has only 35 licensed taxis on the island, so booking ahead is essential. Sea Jets and Blue Star ferries run inter-island routes to Santorini (2hr 30min, €60), Naxos (45 minutes) and Athens Piraeus (5–6 hours).

💡 Travel Tips

  • Greece runs Eastern European Time — two hours ahead of the UK year-round.
  • The currency is the Euro (€).
  • VAT at 24% is included in displayed prices in Greece (reduced 13% on Aegean islands including Mykonos).
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • Mykonos is famously the most expensive Greek island — pints from €8–10, cocktails €15–25 in Little Venice, beach-club bali beds €60–250 a day.
  • Cavo Paradiso entry runs €40–80 with one drink — buy through the venue website to skip the queue.
  • Restaurants in Greece typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at Kounelas, Nautilus and Bill & Coo.
  • Beach-club bali beds at Paradise, Super Paradise and Psarou book out 24–48 hours ahead in summer.
  • The Meltemi wind blows strongly from mid-July to mid-August — pack a windbreaker and avoid the northern beaches if windy.
  • Mykonos has only 35 licensed taxis — pre-book through the Mykonos Taxi app or expect long waits at Cavo Paradiso closing.
  • The Delos UNESCO ferry runs from the Old Port at 10am, 11.30am and 5pm in summer; the site closes Mondays and at 3pm daily.
  • Cruise ships dock from 9.30am to 4pm — visit Mykonos Town early morning or evening for thinner crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mid-July to mid-September is the peak club-and-beach window, with 28–32°C highs and the full Cavo Paradiso residency calendar running. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper flights and hotels and most clubs still open. The island is closed from November to April outside a small Mykonos Town core. Avoid mid-July to mid-August for the strongest Meltemi north winds.
A mixed picture. Mykonos Town and the southern Paradise/Super Paradise beach-club axis are unsuitable for under-12s, but Ornos and Platis Gialos on the south coast deliver calmer family bases with gradually-shelving sandy beaches. Petinos Beach Hotel (Platis Gialos) is the leading family-aimed inventory. For pure family-resort holidays, Crete or Rhodes are better Greek-island choices.
Direct flights to Mykonos Airport (JMK) take 4 hours from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 4 hours 30 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate from over 15 UK airports during the May-to-October season. The transfer to Mykonos Town is 10 minutes by taxi (€20–25) or 15 minutes on the public bus (€2.20).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere, with most clubs, beach clubs and bars taking contactless. Carry small cash for taxis (Mykonos has just 35 licensed taxis), public buses (€2.20 single, cash preferred) and Kiki's Tavern at Agios Sostis (famously cash-only). ATMs are widespread; airport exchange-counter rates are usually poor.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Mykonos is the most expensive Greek island and one of the most expensive Mediterranean destinations — typically 50–80% above Crete or Rhodes for hotels, dining and beach-club spends. A pint runs €8–10, a three-course dinner with wine averages €60–90pp on Little Venice, club entry at Cavo Paradiso is €40–80, and beach-club bali beds at Psarou cost €100–250 a day. Cavo Tagoo and Belvedere are headline premium spends.
For a first couples-or-luxury visit, base in Mykonos Town (Chora) itself — you wake up 5 minutes from Little Venice, the Kato Mili windmills and the Old Port for Delos ferries. Couples wanting a quieter base with beach access should consider Ornos or Platis Gialos on the south coast (15 minutes from town); clubbers should look at Paradise Beach.
