Travel Guide

Menorca is the second-largest of Spain's Balearic Islands at 696 km², lying 35km north-east of Mallorca and 200km east of Barcelona. Its permanent population is just 96,000 — the lowest of the four main Balearics — and the entire island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. The west-east axis runs from the medieval city of Ciutadella to the deep natural harbour of Mahón (Maó), 50km apart. Between them lie 120+ named coves and beaches, the prehistoric Talayotic stone monuments (UNESCO-listed in 2023), the 185km Camí de Cavalls coast-circling walking path, and the highest point on the island at just 358m. Unlike Mallorca and Ibiza, Menorca has resisted high-rise development almost entirely — the island has no skyscrapers, no superclubs, and a height-cap law that protects the coast. UK travellers come for the family-friendly turquoise coves, the slower pace, the gin distillery in Mahón and a Balearic island that has stayed quietly itself.

✨ Why Visit Menorca

  • A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993 — the first Balearic island to gain the designation, with strict environmental protections.
  • 120+ named beaches and coves — from the long sandy stretches of Son Bou (3km) and Cala Galdana to undeveloped pine-fringed coves like Cala Macarella and Cala Pregonda.
  • The 185km Camí de Cavalls coastal path — circles the entire island in 20 mapped stages, walkable in 10–14 days end-to-end or in shorter day sections.
  • UNESCO-listed Talayotic Menorca — the prehistoric Bronze Age stone monuments were inscribed in 2023, with 1,500+ archaeological sites including the Naveta des Tudons.
  • The world's second-deepest natural harbour — Mahón's 5km port hosts a 1700s British naval heritage, the Xoriguer gin distillery and the Lazareto quarantine island.
  • Direct UK flights from over 15 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.

🌴 What Makes Menorca Special

Unlike Mallorca, where Magaluf, Alcúdia and Playa de Palma host millions of summer visitors each year, Menorca caps its hotels at four storeys, has no superclubs, and welcomes barely a fifth of Mallorca's annual visitor numbers. Unlike Ibiza, where the brand is built around clubbing and beach clubs, Menorca runs entirely on its coves, walks and prehistoric history — it's the most family-and-walker-focused of the four Balearic islands. And unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean, the entire 185km coastline can be walked end-to-end on a single waymarked path (the Camí de Cavalls), with no resort sprawl interrupting the cliffs and pine forests. The combination of UNESCO Biosphere status, Talayotic heritage, the deep Mahón harbour and 120+ undeveloped coves makes Menorca distinctly quieter and more refined than its larger neighbours.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Mahón (Maó) — The capital and ferry port at the eastern end, with the world's second-deepest natural harbour, the Xoriguer gin distillery and a 1700s British naval heritage.
  • Ciutadella — The medieval former capital at the western end, with cobbled streets, the Cathedral de Santa Maria and the Festes de Sant Joan in late June.
  • Cala Galdana (south coast) — A pine-fringed sandy cove with the resort of the same name, the gateway to the famous Cala Macarella and Cala Mitjana.
  • Son Bou (south coast) — The island's longest beach at 3km, family-friendly with watersports kiosks and the resort of San Jaime Mediterráneo behind it.
  • Cala'n Bosch & Cala'n Forcat (south-west) — The biggest UK family-resort cluster, with sandy coves and the bulk of the island's all-inclusive inventory.
  • Punta Prima & S'Algar (south-east) — Calmer family resorts on the east coast, close to Mahón.
  • Fornells (north coast) — A small whitewashed fishing village with the 18th-century Torre de Fornells and the island's headline restaurant scene.
  • Es Mercadal & El Toro (central) — The geographic centre with the highest point on the island and the Camí de Cavalls inland section.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Menorca runs a smaller all-inclusive market than Mallorca but a deep family-aimed one, with Hotel Sol Falcó (Cala'n Bosch), Sol Beach House Menorca (adults-only Santo Tomás), Insotel Punta Prima Resort & Spa and Carema Beach Hotel leading the UK family rankings. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £429pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

This is what Menorca was built for. The cove-cut coastline gives families an unusual amount of beach choice, almost all coves are gradually shelving and protected, and the lack of nightlife strips means dinners run early and quietly. Hotel Sol Falcó (Cala'n Bosch), Insotel Punta Prima Resort & Spa and Royal Son Bou Family Club are the strongest family hotels. Pair with the Naveta des Tudons, the Mahón harbour boat trip and a day at Cala Galdana for a varied family week.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Cap Vermell Beach Hotel in Canyamel (a 75-minute ferry from Ciutadella to Cala Ratjada) and the Park Hyatt Mallorca are the headline regional five-stars. Within Menorca itself, Torralbenc (a Relais & Châteaux finca on the southern coast) and Menorca Experimental Palace (Sant Lluís) are the boutique-luxe headline addresses. Faro Capdepera in the north of the island and Cugó Gran Menorca add the design-led country-house alternatives. The Hauser & Wirth Menorca art gallery on the Lazareto island delivers the headline cultural-luxury day-trip.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Menorca carries solid late-availability stock outside the August peak, when Spanish, German and British peak demand fills the island almost completely. The strongest savings appear in mid-May to early June and from late September into mid-October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Sol, Insotel and Sol Falcó properties. Almost every Menorca hotel closes from late October through April; a small core in Mahón and Ciutadella stays open year-round.

📅 Best Time to Visit Menorca

Menorca runs as a summer-only resort island, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the coves at their busiest. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C, with cheaper hotel rates and the Camí de Cavalls path at its best. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walkers and culture-led couples but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The island is genuinely quiet from November to April — Mahón and Ciutadella stay open, but most beach resorts are closed.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Hotel Sol Falcó (Cala'n Bosch), Insotel Punta Prima Resort & Spa (Punta Prima), Royal Son Bou Family Club (Son Bou)
  • Couples: Sol Beach House Menorca (adults-only Santo Tomás), Menorca Experimental Palace (Sant Lluís), Faro Capdepera Menorca
  • Luxury travellers: Torralbenc (Relais & Châteaux finca), Cugó Gran Menorca, Menorca Experimental Palace
  • Budget travellers: Hotel Carlos III (Es Castell), self-catering apartments in Cala'n Bosch and Punta Prima
  • Walkers & cyclists: Hotel Faro de Mahón, Hotel Almirante Farragut (Cala'n Forcat) — close to several Camí de Cavalls trailheads

🚗 Getting Around

A hire car is essential for exploring Menorca properly — the cove-cut coastline and inland Talayotic sites are not well-served by public transport. Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent from around €30 a day at Mahón Airport (MAH), rising to €80+ in peak August. Public buses (TMSA) cover the main resort-airport routes for €5–7; bus 10 connects MAH to Mahón centre in 15 minutes for €2.55, and route 10A onwards to Ciutadella for €5.45. A taxi from MAH to Mahón takes 10 minutes (€15), to Cala'n Bosch 50 minutes (€60), to Cala Galdana 40 minutes (€55). Baleària runs the Mahón–Mallorca (Alcúdia) ferry in 1hr 15min for around €40 single, and Trasmediterránea runs Mahón–Barcelona overnight ferries. Most coves charge €5–10 a day for parking in summer.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Menorca charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • The Camí de Cavalls path has no shade in many sections — carry water and sun cover, walk before 10am or after 5pm in summer.
  • Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta have parking restrictions in summer — arrive before 9.30am or take the shuttle bus from Cala Galdana for €5.
  • The Festes de Sant Joan in Ciutadella (23–24 June) draws huge crowds — book Ciutadella hotels at least six months ahead if travelling on these dates.
  • Mahón gin Pomada (gin with cloudy lemonade) is the local drink — not to be confused with the better-known Spanish Pomada cream.
  • Restaurants in coastal villages typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at Es Cranc and the Mahón harbour terraces in summer.
  • The tramuntana wind on the north coast can blow strongly in summer — switch to south-coast beaches if windy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mid-July to mid-September is the peak family-beach window, with 28–32°C highs and the coves at their busiest. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper hotel rates and the Camí de Cavalls path at its best for walking. The island is closed from November to April outside the year-round Mahón and Ciutadella cores.
Yes — Menorca is one of the strongest family destinations in the Mediterranean. The 120+ coves give families an unusual amount of beach choice, almost all gradually shelving and protected, and the lack of nightlife strips means dinners run early and quietly. Hotel Sol Falcó (Cala'n Bosch) and Royal Son Bou Family Club lead the family hotel inventory.
Direct flights to Mahón Airport (MAH) take 2 hours 15 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 2 hours 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate from over 15 UK airports during the May-to-October season. The transfer to Cala'n Bosch is 50 minutes (€60), to Cala Galdana 40 minutes (€55), to Mahón centre 10 minutes (€15).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in resort areas, with most contactless. Carry small cash for the Sunday Es Mercadal market, sunbed hire (€4–6 a set) and beach parking (€5–10 a day at Cala Macarella, Cala Pregonda and Cala Mitjana). ATMs are widespread in Mahón, Ciutadella and the main resort centres.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Menorca is mid-priced for the Balearics — broadly similar to Mallorca but cheaper than Ibiza. A pint runs €4.50–5.50, a three-course dinner with wine averages €30–45pp, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills. Caldereta de langosta at Es Cranc in Fornells is the headline premium spend at €70–90pp.
For a first family visit, base on the south coast at Cala Galdana, Cala'n Bosch or Son Bou — you wake up close to the best beaches, the family hotel inventory clusters here, and Mahón and Ciutadella are within a 30-minute drive each way. Couples wanting more boutique character should consider Sant Lluís (south-east) or the Fornells fishing village in the north, and culture-led travellers should base in Mahón itself.
