Travel Guide

Majorca is the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands at 3,640 km², lying 200km off the eastern Spanish coast in the western Mediterranean. The island wraps around three distinct geographies: the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana mountain range running 90km along the north-west, the flat agricultural central plain (Es Pla) of windmills and almond groves, and the cove-cut Llevant coast on the east. The capital Palma holds 400,000 of the island's 950,000 residents and a 14th-century Gothic cathedral. Resort areas span the family-friendly north (Alcúdia, Port de Pollença), the polished south-west (Portals Nous, Cala d'Or), the lively south (Magaluf, Palma Nova) and the cove-stitched east (Cala Millor, Porto Cristo). UK travellers come for the 2hr 15min flight, 262 beaches, the deepest all-inclusive market in the Mediterranean and roughly 300 sunny days a year.

✨ Why Visit Majorca

  • The UNESCO Serra de Tramuntana mountain range — 90km of limestone peaks rising to Puig Major (1,445m), the highest point in the Balearics, with over 1,000km of waymarked walking trails.
  • 262 named beaches and coves — from the 6km Playa de Muro to tiny calas like Cala Varques, the island has more catalogued beaches than any other Mediterranean destination its size.
  • A short flight from over 25 UK airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate dense schedules from London Gatwick, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow into Palma (PMI), 2hr 15min from London.
  • Deep package-holiday infrastructure — Magaluf, Alcúdia, Cala d'Or, Santa Ponsa and Cala Millor between them hold one of Europe's largest concentrations of UK-aimed all-inclusive hotels.
  • Genuine cultural depth — Palma's Gothic cathedral, the Sóller train, the Carthusian monastery at Valldemossa where Chopin wintered in 1838, and the prehistoric Talayotic sites of Capocorb Vell.
  • Around 300 sunny days a year — peak summer hits 31°C, with shoulder months of May, June, September and October still delivering 24–28°C.

🌴 What Makes Majorca Special

Unlike Ibiza, where the brand is built around superclubs and beach clubs, Majorca runs on geographic variety — you can hike the Tramuntana in the morning, swim at Cala Macarella in the afternoon and dine in Palma's old town that night. Unlike Menorca, which trades on quiet preservation, Majorca delivers heavyweight infrastructure: a busy international airport, motorway-grade roads, an opera house, Michelin-starred kitchens and an underground rail network. Compared to mainland Costa del Sol resorts, Majorca packs every European holiday template — backpacker, party, family, luxury, walker, cyclist, foodie — into one 3,640 km² island. And unlike the Greek islands, it works year-round to a degree most Mediterranean destinations don't, with Palma running as a city-break market through January and February.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Palma & Playa de Palma (South) — The capital, with the Gothic cathedral, Mercat de l'Olivar and a 10km city beach stretching east to El Arenal.
  • Magaluf, Palma Nova & Santa Ponsa (South-West) — The island's biggest UK package-holiday cluster, with waterparks, the Punta Ballena nightlife strip and family hotels.
  • Portals Nous & Port d'Andratx (West) — Polished marina towns favoured by celebrities, with the Philippe Starck-designed Port Adriano nearby.
  • Sóller, Deià & Valldemossa (Tramuntana / North-West) — Mountain villages on the UNESCO range, reached by the 1912 wooden train.
  • Pollença, Port de Pollença & Cap de Formentor (North) — A quieter, walker-and-cyclist favourite, anchored by the 384m Formentor lighthouse cliffs.
  • Alcúdia, Port d'Alcúdia & Playa de Muro (North) — The island's largest stretch of beach (10km combined) and the S'Albufera wetlands.
  • Cala d'Or, Cala Millor & Porto Cristo (East) — Cove-cut family resorts, with the Coves del Drac sea caves at Porto Cristo.

A 3,640 km² island that genuinely covers every European holiday template — broken down by category below.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Majorca runs the deepest UK all-inclusive market in the Mediterranean. Iberostar Albufera Park (Alcúdia) and Universal Hotel Romántica (Alcúdia) lead the family AI rankings, while BH Mallorca (Magaluf, adults-only) caters for under-30s. Iberostar Cristina (Playa de Palma) and Hipotels Mediterraneo (Sa Coma) round out the southern AI inventory. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £349pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

The 6km Playa de Muro beach (Alcúdia), the Zafiro Palace Alcúdia swim-up suites, Aqualand El Arenal (one of Europe's largest waterparks) and the Palma Aquarium (3.5-million-litre shark tank) make Majorca the strongest family island in the Balearics. Avoid Magaluf's Punta Ballena strip if you have children under 12 — the eastern resorts of Cala d'Or, Sa Coma and Cala Millor deliver calmer evenings.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Belmond La Residencia (Deià) — a 17th-century manor in the Tramuntana once frequented by Princess Diana — is the headline Balearic five-star. Cap Rocat (Cala Blava), a converted 19th-century military fortress on Palma Bay, holds Leading Hotels of the World status. Cap Vermell Grand Hotel (Canyamel) and Castell Son Claret (Es Capdellà) round out the luxury inventory, with Pure Salt Port Adriano the leading marina-side adults-only option.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Late discounts are uncommon during July–August, when Spanish, German and British peak demand fills the island almost completely. The strongest savings appear in mid-May to early June and from late September into mid-October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Iberostar, Hipotels and Universal properties. Magaluf's adults-only stock often carries the best late availability.

📅 Best Time to Visit Majorca

Majorca is a Mediterranean summer destination, not a year-round one. Peak season runs late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and almost guaranteed dry, sunny days. Late May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 24–28°C, with thinner crowds and lower hotel rates. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and remain pleasant for walking, cycling and city breaks but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). Winter is mild (14–16°C in Palma) but quiet — the Tramuntana mountains can see snow on Puig Major, and many resort hotels close from November to March.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Iberostar Albufera Park (Alcúdia), Zafiro Palace Alcúdia, Hipotels Mediterraneo (Sa Coma)
  • Couples: Belmond La Residencia (Deià), Hotel Esplendido (Port de Sóller), Hostal Cuba Suites (Palma)
  • Luxury travellers: Cap Rocat (Cala Blava), Castell Son Claret (Es Capdellà), Cap Vermell Grand Hotel (Canyamel)
  • First-timers & nightlife: BH Mallorca (Magaluf, adults-only), Hotel Sol Katmandu (Magaluf), Hard Rock Hotel Palma
  • Walkers & cyclists: Hotel Sant Pere (Pollença), Es Princep (Palma old town), Finca Son Lladó (Tramuntana)

🚗 Getting Around

A hire car is the most flexible option for exploring inland Majorca — OK Mobility, Cicar and Record Go rent from around €25 a day at Palma Airport (PMI), rising to €60+ in peak August. Public buses run by TIB cover all major resort-airport routes for €5–8, and a dense night bus operates around Palma. A taxi from PMI to Magaluf costs around €30, to Alcúdia around €80. The Sóller train and tram combo (€25 return) is the island's iconic ride. For inter-island travel, Baleària and Trasmediterránea run regular Palma–Ibiza ferries (2hr 15min, from €40 single) and Palma–Mahón (Menorca) crossings (4hr 30min).

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics use Central European Time — one hour ahead of the UK year-round.
  • IVA at 21% applies here, unlike the 7% IGIC of the Canaries — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Majorca charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • Restaurant kitchens typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead in resort hotspots in summer.
  • Cap de Formentor's road requires a daily access permit (€15) from June to September; take the bus from Port de Pollença instead.
  • The Sa Calobra cliff road has 26 hairpin bends — don't attempt it in a campervan or with motion-sensitive passengers.
  • Hire-car booking three months ahead saves around 40% over peak-summer walk-up rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Late June to early September is the headline summer-sun window, with 28–32°C highs and sea temperatures of 23–26°C. May, June, September and October are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with thinner crowds. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walking and cycling, but the sea is too cold for comfortable swimming.
Yes — the strongest family island in the Balearics. Playa de Muro (Alcúdia) is 6km of gradually-shelving Blue Flag sand, the Zafiro Palace Alcúdia runs swim-up suites, and Aqualand El Arenal, Palma Aquarium and the Sóller train fill non-beach days. Avoid Magaluf's Punta Ballena strip with under-12s.
Direct flights to Palma (PMI) take 2 hours 15 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 2 hours 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate from over 25 UK airports — the densest schedule of any Mediterranean destination.
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in resort areas, with most hotels, restaurants and beach bars taking contactless. Small cash is useful for taxis, sunbed hire (€4–6 per set) and weekly markets like Sineu (Wednesday) and Sineu (Wednesday).
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Majorca is mid-priced for the Mediterranean — broadly similar to mainland Costa del Sol but cheaper than Ibiza or the French Riviera. A three-course dinner with wine averages €30–45pp, a beer €4–5, and the tourist tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills. All-inclusive packages from £349pp are the strongest value.
For a first visit, Alcúdia or Port d'Alcúdia in the north delivers the best all-round combination — the longest beach, family infrastructure, the S'Albufera wetlands and easy access to the Tramuntana mountains. Port de Sóller suits walkers and couples, Magaluf suits nightlife-led trips, and Palma itself works best as a city-break or off-season base.
