Travel Guide
Kallithea is the largest and northernmost beach resort on Halkidiki's Kassandra Peninsula — the western "finger" of the three-pronged Halkidiki region — sitting on the eastern Kassandra coast, 75km south-east of Thessaloniki and 80km from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG). The town developed in the 1970s on the site of the 4th-century BC Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus, with original temple ruins still visible directly behind the beach. Modern Kallithea splits into two distinct halves: the central beach-and-resort strip running along Kallithea Bay, and the inland village quarter with the small church and traditional Greek tavernas. Kallithea today holds Halkidiki's strongest concentration of mid-market four-star hotels and the polished Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel — UK travellers come for direct seasonal flights into Thessaloniki, the closest Kassandra family-resort base, the Sanctuary heritage and the gateway position for Mount Athos boat trips.
✨ Why Visit Kallithea
- Halkidiki's most polished mid-market resort — Kallithea holds the strongest concentration of four-star family hotels on the Kassandra Peninsula.
- The 4th-century BC Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus — original temple ruins dedicated to the Egyptian-Greek hybrid god, directly behind the resort beach.
- A 1.5km Blue Flag golden-sand beach — gradually shelving, pine-tree shaded at the northern end and watersports along the central strip.
- Direct gateway to Mount Athos boat trips — daily 6-hour cruises from Kallithea harbour circle the UNESCO autonomous Orthodox monastic state.
- The Sani Resort luxury complex 12km north — Halkidiki's leading five-star enclave, with boutique restaurants, beach clubs and the annual Sani Festival.
- Direct UK flights into Thessaloniki (SKG) from 12+ airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from May to October, 3hr 30min from London Gatwick.
🌴 What Makes Kallithea Special
Unlike Hanioti and Pefkochori further south on the Kassandra Peninsula, Kallithea sits closest to Thessaloniki — meaning a 1-hour transfer rather than 90 minutes, and direct access to the city's UNESCO Byzantine walls, the White Tower and the Modiano food market for cultural day trips. Unlike the wider Mediterranean's Greek-island resorts, Kallithea pairs proper sandy Mediterranean beaches with northern-Greek cuisine, working olive-grove countryside and easy access to inland archaeology — the Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus, Petralona Cave and Aristotle's birthplace at Stagira. And unlike anywhere else in Halkidiki, Kallithea sits at the gateway to all three peninsulas — Kassandra to the south for beaches, Sithonia eastwards for quieter coves, and Athos further east for the Mount Athos boat trips. The combination of polished hotels, beach quality, archaeological depth and three-peninsula access makes Kallithea the most rounded Halkidiki base for first-time visitors.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays
Kallithea runs Halkidiki's strongest UK family AI market on the Kassandra Peninsula, with Pallini Beach Hotel, Athos Palace Hotel, Kassandra Palace Hotel & Spa and Aegean Melathron Thalasso Spa Hotel leading the rankings. Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel (5km south at Kryopigi) and Sani Resort (12km north) add the upper-tier luxury options. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £399pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term — comfortably below mainland Italian or Spanish luxury beach destinations.
👨👩👧👦 Family Holidays
This is one of Halkidiki's strongest family-resort destinations. The 1.5km gradually-shelving Blue Flag beach has lifeguards in summer, the resort is genuinely flat and pram-friendly, and the central seafront restaurants are family-aimed. Aegean Melathron, Pallini Beach Hotel and Kassandra Palace lead the family inventory. Pair with the Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus visit, the Mount Athos boat trip, the Petralona Cave day trip and Aqualand waterpark in nearby Halkidiki.
💎 Luxury Holidays
True five-star inventory in Kallithea itself is limited — the resort sits firmly in the polished four-star segment. Aegean Melathron Thalasso Spa Hotel is the leading polished option in town. For genuine Halkidiki five-star, head 12km north to Sani Resort — Halkidiki's leading luxury enclave with the Sani Asterias adults-only suites, the Forbes-recognised Sani Beach Hotel and the Sani Club. Eagles Palace and Eagles Villas (on the Athos coast 75km east) and Danai Beach Resort (Sithonia, 50km south-east) deliver the wider Halkidiki luxury inventory. Pomegranate Wellness Spa Hotel (5km south at Kryopigi) adds the boutique-spa alternative.
⏰ Last-Minute Deals
Kallithea carries Halkidiki's strongest UK late-availability stock — the resort's volume of mid-market four-star inventory means consistent late-deal supply. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into mid-October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Pallini Beach Hotel, Athos Palace, Kassandra Palace and Aegean Melathron properties. Almost every Kallithea hotel closes from late October through April; the resort effectively shuts down in winter except for a small Thessaloniki city-break core 80km north.

📅 Best Time to Visit Kallithea
Kallithea runs as a summer-only resort, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 24–26°C, and the beach, Mount Athos boat trips and family hotels at full capacity. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper hotel rates and the inland archaeology and cultural day-trips at their best for visiting. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walkers and culture-led couples but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The resort is closed from November to April.
🏨 Where to Stay

🚗 Getting Around
The 80km transfer from Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) to Kallithea takes 1 hour by taxi (around €100) or 90 minutes by package transfer. KTEL Halkidiki buses connect Thessaloniki to Kallithea for €10–13 in 90 minutes from the central Halkidiki Bus Station — useful as a value alternative. Within the resort, the seafront promenade is fully walkable and the central village is 10 minutes inland on foot. Sixt, Drive Rent-a-Car and OK Mobility rent cars from around €30 a day at SKG — a hire car is essential for exploring beyond the resort to Sani, Cape Possidi or the inland archaeology. Public buses connect Kallithea to Hanioti, Pefkochori, Sani and Polychrono for €2–4. Boat trips around Mount Athos depart from Kallithea harbour daily in summer.
💡 Travel Tips
- Greece runs Eastern European Time — two hours ahead of the UK year-round.
- The currency is the Euro (€).
- VAT at 24% is included in displayed prices in Greece (reduced 13% on Aegean islands; the standard rate applies on the mainland including Halkidiki).
- Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
- Tap water is safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
- A hire car is essential for exploring beyond the resort — the Petralona Cave, Aristotle Park, Cape Possidi and the Sithonia Peninsula all need a car.
- The Mount Athos peninsula is closed to women and to non-Orthodox men without a diamonitirion permit — most visitors see the monasteries by boat from Kallithea or Ouranoupoli only.
- Restaurants in Greece typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at Sani Marina and the Kallithea seafront in summer.
- The annual Sani Festival (July to August) at the Sani Hill Amphitheatre books out 2 months ahead — reserve through the festival website.
- Tipping is appreciated but not expected — round up the bill or add 10% for good service.
- Thessaloniki day trips work well by KTEL bus from Kallithea (90 minutes, €10–13 single).
- The Cape Possidi sand spit has no shade — pack water and sun cover before walking out from the lighthouse car park.
- The Petralona Cave maintains a constant 17°C year-round — bring a light jacket even in August.
