Travel Guide

San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany in Catalan) is the second-largest town on Ibiza after Ibiza Town, sitting on the west coast of the island, 16km west of Ibiza Town and 17km from Ibiza Airport (IBZ). The town wraps around a deep, sheltered bay — the largest natural harbour in the Balearics — and built its reputation in the 1970s and 80s as a UK package-holiday destination. Today it carries two distinct identities: the legendary west-facing Sunset Strip of Café del Mar, Café Mambo and Mint Lounge, where the chillout-music genre was effectively invented; and the West End bar strip in the centre of town, the densest concentration of UK-aimed bars and pubs on the island. UK travellers come for direct UK flights from over 25 airports, the cheapest hotels in Ibiza, the world's most famous sunset and easy access to Cala Comte, Cala Bassa and Cala Salada within a 15-minute drive.

✨ Why Visit San Antonio

  • The world's most famous sunset — Café del Mar (since 1980), Café Mambo and Mint Lounge sit on the same west-facing rocks, with sunset drinks from 7pm to 9pm in summer.
  • Eden Ibiza superclub on the doorstep — a 5,000-capacity world-leading venue on the seafront, with the Discobus running to Pacha and Amnesia after 5am.
  • The cheapest hotels on the island — typically 25–35% below Ibiza Town and Playa d'en Bossa for equivalent inventory.
  • Easy access to the west-coast beaches — Cala Comte, Cala Bassa and Cala Salada are all within 15 minutes by car or boat shuttle.
  • A genuine working-port atmosphere — the deep San Antonio Bay is the largest natural harbour in the Balearics, with sailing yachts, cruise ships and local fishing boats sharing the water.
  • Direct UK flights from over 25 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, 2hr 30min from London.

🌴 What Makes San Antonio Special

Unlike Playa d'en Bossa — Ibiza's other main resort strip — San Antonio splits its identity firmly into day and night. By day, the bay's promenade, the boat trips to Cala Bassa and the walks to Cala Gracio give it a calm, family-able energy; by night, the West End strip and Eden Ibiza pull in the under-25s and stag-hen groups. Unlike Ibiza Town, where the UNESCO Dalt Vila old town shapes the price point upwards, San Antonio remains the island's value resort — pints from €4, club entry from €30, and packages from £279pp shoulder season. And unlike anywhere else on Ibiza, San Antonio owns the sunset — the rocks below Café del Mar and Café Mambo are the single most-photographed spot on the island, and the chillout-music genre was effectively born here in the 1980s. The combination of cheapest hotels, world-famous sunsets and a working harbour gives San Antonio a distinct identity that Playa d'en Bossa and Santa Eulalia can't match.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • San Antonio Bay (the Sunset Strip) — The west-facing rocks of Café del Mar, Café Mambo and Mint Lounge, the spiritual home of the chillout genre.
  • The West End — The densest concentration of UK-aimed bars and pubs in the resort centre, anchored by Carrer Santa Agnès.
  • Avinguda de Doctor Fleming — The main central spine running from the bay to Eden Ibiza, with restaurants, shops and the bus station.
  • San Antonio Marina — The deep-water sailing harbour at the eastern end of the bay, home to Ocean Beach Club and the Es Vedrà boat-trip operators.
  • Cala Gracio (1.5km north) — A small pine-fringed sandy cove reached by the flat 2km coastal promenade.
  • Cala Salada (4km north) — A pristine pine-fringed cove with crystal-clear water, accessible by car or shuttle bus.
  • Cala Bassa (7km south) — A polished white-sand beach with the headline beach club, reached by Cala Bassa Boat Co. shuttle.
  • Cala Comte (10km south) — Three sandy coves with the Sunset Ashram cliff bar, the island's other headline sunset venue.

Best Value Deals

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

San Antonio runs Ibiza's strongest value AI market, with Hotel Ibiza Rocks (party-aimed adults-only), AluaSoul Ibiza (adults-only sea-view), TRH Hotel Torrent Bay and Sirenis Hotel Club Aura (Port d'es Torrent) leading the UK rankings. Hotel Vibra Caleta and Hotel Reina del Mar add the value end. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £329pp in May or October, climbing to £899pp at August half-term — typically 25–30% below Playa d'en Bossa for the same inventory.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

San Antonio is a mixed picture for families. The town centre and West End are unsuitable for under-12s, but the bay's east side (towards the marina) and San Antonio Bay (Bahía de San Antonio) to the north of the centre are calmer family bases. Sirenis Hotel Club Aura at Port d'es Torrent (3km south) and Hotel Riu La Mola (Port d'es Torrent) are the strongest family hotels. Pair with Cala Bassa Beach Club (kids' programme), Aguamar Water Park (Playa d'en Bossa, 25 minutes east) and the Es Vedrà boat trip.

💎 Luxury Holidays

San Antonio has limited true five-star inventory — for serious luxury, base in Ibiza Town or the north of the island. AluaSoul Ibiza (adults-only) and Hotel Es Vivé are the resort's leading polished options. Hotel Pacha Ibiza in Ibiza Town and Six Senses Ibiza in the north are the island's headline five-stars. The Cala Bassa Beach Club day-pass and Ushuaïa Beach Hotel (Playa d'en Bossa) day-trips deliver the headline luxury experiences for San Antonio guests.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

San Antonio carries the strongest late-availability stock on Ibiza, particularly outside the peak club residency calendar. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from late September into early October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Ibiza Rocks, AluaSoul, TRH Torrent Bay and Sirenis properties. Almost every San Antonio hotel closes from late October to late April; true winter deals are limited.

📅 Best Time to Visit San Antonio

San Antonio runs as a summer-only resort, with most hotels and clubs open from late April to early November. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the West End strip and Eden Ibiza at full capacity. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper flights and hotels and most clubs still open. April and late October still deliver 19–23°C, but most clubs and many hotels are closed. The resort is genuinely shut from November to April.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Sirenis Hotel Club Aura (Port d'es Torrent), Hotel Riu La Mola, TRH Hotel Torrent Bay
  • Couples: AluaSoul Ibiza (adults-only sea-view), Hotel Es Vivé (boutique)
  • Luxury travellers: Six Senses Ibiza (35km north), Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay (Talamanca, 30 minutes east)

🚗 Getting Around

A hire car is the most flexible option for exploring Ibiza properly — Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent from around €40 a day at Ibiza Airport (IBZ), rising to €100+ in peak August. Public buses are frequent: line L3 connects San Antonio to Ibiza Town in 30 minutes for €4. A taxi from IBZ to San Antonio takes 25 minutes (€30); taxis after 11pm carry a €5 night surcharge. The Discobus runs an all-night service connecting San Antonio, Eden Ibiza, Amnesia, Pacha and Playa d'en Bossa from 12am to 6am for €4 single — the safest way to club-hop. Cala Bassa Boat Co. runs the shuttle to Cala Bassa from San Antonio Marina (€15 round trip, 25 minutes each way).

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Ibiza charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled almost exclusively.
  • Café del Mar, Café Mambo and Mint Lounge fill from 6.30pm — arrive 90 minutes before sunset to claim a sea-facing seat in summer.
  • Eden Ibiza entry runs €30–50 with one drink — buy through Ibiza Spotlight, not street touts.
  • The Discobus is the cheapest and safest way home from clubs — €4 single, runs until 6am.
  • The West End strip can feel intense — families travelling with children should base in San Antonio Bay (north end) or Port d'es Torrent (south of the centre) rather than the central streets.
  • Cala Bassa Beach Club sunbeds book out 48 hours ahead in summer; reserve through their website.
  • Stag and hen groups carry a Sustainable Tourism Tax surcharge at most venues — check in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mid-July to mid-September is the peak club-and-sunset window, with 28–32°C highs and the full Eden Ibiza residency calendar running. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper flights and hotels and most clubs still open. The resort is closed from November to April.
San Antonio is a mixed picture — the central West End is unsuitable for children, but the San Antonio Bay (north end) and Port d'es Torrent (3km south) are calmer family bases with gradually-shelving water. Pair with Cala Bassa Beach Club, Aguamar Water Park (Playa d'en Bossa) and the Es Vedrà boat trip. Santa Eulalia (45 minutes east) is the better family-resort option for under-12s.
Direct flights to Ibiza Airport (IBZ) take 2 hours 30 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 3 hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow. easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways operate from over 25 UK airports during the May-to-October season. The transfer to San Antonio is 25 minutes by taxi (€30) or 30 minutes on bus L3 (€4).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere, with most clubs, beach clubs and bars taking contactless. Carry small cash for taxis, the Discobus night buses (€4 single, cash only) and the West End street vendors. ATMs are widespread; airport exchange-counter rates are usually poor.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
San Antonio is the cheapest of Ibiza's main resorts — typically 25–30% below Ibiza Town or Playa d'en Bossa for hotels and dining. A pint runs €4–6, a three-course dinner with wine averages €25–40pp, club entry at Eden Ibiza is €30–50, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night. All-inclusive packages from £329pp are the strongest Ibiza value.
For a first-time clubbing visit, base near the central San Antonio Bay seafront — you wake up 5 minutes from Café del Mar, 10 minutes from Eden Ibiza and the West End, and the Discobus runs from outside until 6am. Couples wanting more atmosphere should consider San Antonio Bay (the northern end), and families should look at Port d'es Torrent (3km south) for a calmer family-resort feel.
