Travel Guide
Cala Galdana is a beach resort on the south-western coast of Menorca, in the municipality of Ferreries, 30km from Mahón Airport (MAH) and 25km west of Mahón Old Town. The resort wraps a 500m sandy Blue Flag bay framed by 60m limestone cliffs, with the protected Algendar Ravine running inland to the north and the smaller Algendaret gorge to the east. The resulting horseshoe-shaped cove — sheltered by pine cliffs on three sides — has earned Cala Galdana the nickname "Perla del Sud" (Pearl of the South). The resort itself was built in the 1960s but kept low-rise: Menorca's strict planning rules cap most central buildings at four storeys, preserving the surrounding pine forest. UK travellers come for the postcard-perfect bay, the gateway position to the famous Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta cliff hikes, the Camí de Cavalls trailheads at both ends and the strongest concentration of family-AI inventory on Menorca's south coast.
✨ Why Visit Cala Galdana
- The most-photographed bay on Menorca — the 500m horseshoe sandy beach framed by 60m pine cliffs is consistently rated among Spain's best beaches.
- Direct walking access to Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta — a 3.5km Camí de Cavalls cliff-top hike west reaches Spain's most-photographed twin coves.
- The Algendar Ravine on the doorstep — a protected freshwater pine-and-limestone gorge runs inland from the eastern end of the resort.
- A genuinely low-rise resort — strict planning rules cap most buildings at four storeys, preserving the surrounding forested cliffs.
- The strongest family-AI inventory on Menorca's south coast — Cala Galdana holds the bulk of the south-west's UK family hotel rooms.
- Direct UK flights into Mahón from 15+ airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.
🌴 What Makes Cala Galdana Special
Unlike Son Bou to the east, where the resort identity centres on Menorca's longest 2.6km beach, Cala Galdana's appeal is the dramatic 500m horseshoe shape — sheltered by 60m pine cliffs on three sides, with the protected Algendar Ravine running directly inland. Unlike Cala'n Bosch in the south-west, Cala Galdana sits at the gateway to Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta — the two most-photographed coves in the Balearics, only reachable by 3.5km cliff-path walks or by boat. And unlike anywhere else on Menorca, the resort gives families a postcard-perfect Blue Flag bay directly outside their hotel, with kayak access to undeveloped neighbouring coves and Camí de Cavalls trailheads at both ends. The combination of dramatic horseshoe bay, protected ravines and the Macarella cliff path makes Cala Galdana the most photogenic family base on Menorca.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays
Cala Galdana runs a strong family AI market for the south-west coast, with Hotel Cala Galdana & Villas d'Aljandar (the resort's largest family AI), Meliá Cala Galdana and Hotel Audax (adults-only) leading the UK rankings. Hotel Sol Beach House Menorca (Sant Tomás, 15km east, adults-only) and Insotel Punta Prima Resort & Spa (45 minutes east) add the upper-tier options. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £399pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term.
👨👩👧👦 Family Holidays
This is what Cala Galdana was built for. The 500m gradually-shelving horseshoe bay is the most sheltered family beach on Menorca, with lifeguards in summer and calm water year-round. Hotel Cala Galdana & Villas d'Aljandar runs themed family pools and a kids' club; Meliá Cala Galdana sits directly on the western beach. Pair with the cliff walks to Cala Macarella, the kayak trips and the Naveta des Tudons UNESCO site for a varied family week.
💎 Luxury Holidays
Cala Galdana's luxury inventory is small but distinctive. Hotel Audax (adults-only, with a rooftop infinity pool overlooking the bay) is the headline polished option, with Forbes 4-Star credentials. Torralbenc (Relais & Châteaux finca, 25 minutes east near Es Castell), Menorca Experimental Palace (Sant Lluís, 30 minutes east) and Faro Capdepera Menorca (boutique lighthouse, 50 minutes north-east) deliver the wider Menorca luxury inventory. Within the resort itself, Meliá Cala Galdana is the leading mid-tier polished option.
⏰ Last-Minute Deals
Cala Galdana carries solid late-availability stock outside the August peak. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into mid-October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Hotel Cala Galdana, Meliá Cala Galdana and Hotel Audax properties. Almost every Cala Galdana hotel closes from late October through early May; the resort effectively shuts down in winter.

📅 Best Time to Visit Cala Galdana
Cala Galdana runs as a summer-only resort, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the bay at its busiest. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C, with cheaper hotel rates and the Camí de Cavalls cliff path to Cala Macarella at its best for walking. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walkers and culture-led couples but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The resort is closed from November to April.

🚗 Getting Around
The 30km transfer from Mahón Airport (MAH) takes 30 minutes by taxi (around €50) via the Me-1 main road and the Me-22 from Ferreries. Public buses (TMSA) run only seasonally — line 51 connects Cala Galdana to Ferreries every 1–2 hours in summer for €2.55, with onward connections to Mahón and Ciutadella. Within the resort, the bay-side promenade is fully walkable end to end (500m), and the Camí de Cavalls trailheads sit at both eastern and western ends. Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent cars from around €30 a day at MAH, rising to €80+ in peak August. A hire car is essential for exploring Menorca's other coves and the Talayotic UNESCO sites — public transport doesn't reach the smaller villages.
💡 Travel Tips
- The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
- IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
- Menorca charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
- Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
- Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
- The Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta cliff path has parking restrictions at the destination ends — walk in from Cala Galdana or use the shuttle bus from Ferreries (€5 single, summer only).
- The Camí de Cavalls path has no shade in many sections — carry water and walk before 10am or after 5pm in summer.
- Cala Galdana's bay-side parking fills by 9am in August — arrive early or use the resort hotel parking.
- Restaurant kitchens typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at the central seafront chiringuitos in summer.
- Hire cars book out months ahead in July and August at Mahón Airport — reserve at the same time as flights.
- The tramuntana wind on the north coast can blow strongly in summer — Cala Galdana's south-facing position keeps it calmer than Fornells or Cala Pregonda.
- The Naveta des Tudons UNESCO site closes at 6pm in summer — visit late afternoon for the cleanest light.
