Travel Guide

Son Bou is a beach resort on the southern coast of Menorca, in the municipality of Alaior, 26km west of Mahón Airport (MAH) and 25km east of Ciutadella. The resort wraps the eastern end of Menorca's longest continuous sandy beach — the 2.6km Playa de Son Bou — with the neighbouring Sant Tomás beach extending the unbroken sand west for another 1.5km. Behind the western half of the beach sits the protected Prat de Son Bou freshwater wetland reserve, a key bird-watching site. The resort itself is a low-rise cluster of family hotels and apartment buildings — Menorca's strict planning rules cap most central buildings at four storeys, preserving an open horizon. Son Bou is genuinely seasonal, opening late April and closing early November. UK travellers come for the longest beach in Menorca, the protected wetlands and dune system, the eastern Christian basilica ruins and the strongest family-AI inventory on the south coast.

✨ Why Visit Son Bou

  • Menorca's longest continuous beach — 2.6km of fine sand, gradually shelving and Blue Flag-rated, with three distinct named sections.
  • Protected wetlands behind the western dunes — the Prat de Son Bou reserve is one of Menorca's key bird-watching sites, with a free boardwalk through reedbeds.
  • A 5th-century early-Christian basilica directly on the beach — the eastern end of Son Bou holds late-Roman ruins with original mosaic floor outlines.
  • Direct access to the 185km Camí de Cavalls coast path — Son Bou sits at the trailhead for sections east to Cala en Porter and west to Sant Tomás.
  • A genuinely low-rise resort — strict planning rules cap most buildings at four storeys, with no high-rise development.
  • Direct UK flights into Mahón from 15+ airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.

🌴 What Makes Son Bou Special

Unlike Cala'n Bosch in the south-west, where a single sandy bay anchors the family-resort experience, Son Bou's 2.6km beach gives families an unusual amount of space to spread out — even at peak August, the western dunes-and-wetlands end stays quiet. Unlike Cala Galdana, where the cove is dramatic but small at 500m, Son Bou's continuous east-west sandy stretch (combining with Sant Tomás for an unbroken 4km) is among the longest in the Balearics. And unlike anywhere else on Menorca, Son Bou's protected wetlands and 5th-century Christian basilica add genuine cultural-and-natural depth directly on the beach, rather than as a separate day-trip. The combination of longest beach, dune-protected wetlands, the basilica ruins and Camí de Cavalls trailhead access makes Son Bou the most rounded family base on Menorca's south coast.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Playa de Son Bou (main beach) — The 2.6km Blue Flag central beach, with sunbed hire, lifeguards and watersports kiosks.
  • Playa de Atalis (eastern end) — A quieter eastern section of the same beach, fronting the 5th-century basilica ruins.
  • Prat de Son Bou wetlands (western end) — The protected freshwater reserve behind the western dunes, with a free 1.2km boardwalk.
  • Sant Tomás (1km west) — A separate but connected resort with a smaller sandy beach and the Hotel Sol Beach House Menorca (adults-only).
  • Alaior town (5km inland) — The municipal capital, with a Wednesday morning market, the Mahón-Menorca DOP cheese dairy at Subaida and traditional tapas restaurants.
  • Es Migjorn Gran (8km west) — A small whitewashed village on the south-coast plateau, with a quiet Sunday morning market.
  • Cala en Porter (10km east) — A small resort with the famous Cova d'en Xoroi sea-cave bar, reachable on foot via the Camí de Cavalls.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Son Bou runs the strongest family AI market on Menorca's south coast, with Royal Son Bou Family Club (themed family resort), Sol Milanos Pingüinos, Insotel Hotel Tarida (Cala Tarida sister property) and Hotel Sant Jordi leading the UK family rankings. Sol Beach House Menorca (adults-only Sant Tomás, 1km west) adds the upper-tier couples option. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £379pp in May or October, climbing to £949pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

This is what Son Bou was built for. The 2.6km gradually-shelving Blue Flag bay has lifeguards in summer, the resort is genuinely flat and pram-friendly, and the dune-and-wetlands western end gives families plenty of quieter space. Royal Son Bou Family Club (themed dinosaur and pirate kids' programmes, multiple pools) and Sol Milanos Pingüinos lead the family hotel inventory. Pair with the Mahón harbour boat trip, a day at the Naveta des Tudons UNESCO Talayotic site, and the Cova d'en Xoroi for a varied family week.

💎 Luxury Holidays

True five-star inventory in Son Bou itself is limited — for serious luxury, head to Mahón or Sant Lluís. Sol Beach House Menorca (Sant Tomás, adults-only) is the closest polished option. Torralbenc (Relais & Châteaux finca, 15km east), Menorca Experimental Palace (Sant Lluís, 25km east) and Faro Capdepera Menorca (boutique lighthouse) deliver the wider Menorca luxury inventory. The Hauser & Wirth Menorca art gallery on the Lazareto island (Mahón harbour, 25km east) delivers the headline cultural-luxury day-trip.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Son Bou carries solid late-availability stock outside the August peak. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into mid-October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Royal Son Bou, Sol Milanos Pingüinos, Insotel Tarida and Sant Jordi properties. Almost every Son Bou hotel closes from late October through April; the resort effectively shuts down in winter.

📅 Best Time to Visit Son Bou

Son Bou runs as a summer-only resort, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the beach and family hotels at full capacity. Late May, early June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C, with cheaper hotel rates and the Camí de Cavalls coast path at its best for walking. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walkers and culture-led couples but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The resort is closed from November to April.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Royal Son Bou Family Club (themed family resort), Sol Milanos Pingüinos, Insotel Hotel Tarida
  • Couples: Sol Beach House Menorca (Sant Tomás, adults-only), Hotel Santo Tomás (adults-only)
  • Luxury travellers: Torralbenc (Relais & Châteaux, 15km east), Menorca Experimental Palace (Sant Lluís, 25km east)
  • Budget travellers: Hotel Sant Jordi, self-catering apartments around the central seafront
  • Walkers & cyclists: Hotel Santo Tomás, Sol Beach House Menorca (close to several Camí de Cavalls trailheads)

🚗 Getting Around

The 26km transfer from Mahón Airport (MAH) takes 25 minutes by taxi (around €40) via the Me-1 main road. Public buses (TMSA) run only seasonally — line 51 connects Son Bou to Alaior every 1–2 hours in summer for €2.55, with onward connections to Mahón and Ciutadella. Within the resort, the seafront promenade is fully walkable end to end (2.6km), and the Camí de Cavalls trailheads sit at both eastern and western ends. Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent cars from around €30 a day at MAH, rising to €80+ in peak August. A hire car is essential for exploring Menorca's other coves and the Talayotic UNESCO sites — public transport doesn't reach the smaller villages.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Menorca charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax (€1–4pp per night, paid at hotel check-in) from May to October.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • The Camí de Cavalls path has no shade in many sections — carry water and walk before 10am or after 5pm in summer.
  • The 5th-century basilica ruins on the eastern beach are unfenced and freely accessible — please don't walk on the original mosaic floor outline.
  • The Prat de Son Bou wetlands boardwalk is best at dawn for the cleanest birdlife — pack binoculars.
  • Restaurant kitchens typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at S'Atalis and the central beachfront in summer.
  • The Cova d'en Xoroi sea-cave bar at Cala en Porter (10km east) is a fixed evening experience — sundowner table reservations book 24 hours ahead in summer.
  • Hire cars book out months ahead in July and August at Mahón Airport — reserve at the same time as flights.
  • The tramuntana wind on the north coast can blow strongly in summer — Son Bou's south-facing position means it stays calmer than Fornells or Cala Pregonda.

Son Bou is mid-priced for the Balearics — broadly similar to Cala Galdana but cheaper than Cala'n Bosch on hotels and dining. A pint runs €4–5, a three-course dinner with wine averages €30–45pp, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills. Caldereta de langosta at Es Cranc in Fornells is the headline premium spend at €70–90pp.
For a first family visit, base near the central seafront behind the main 2.6km beach — you wake up 100m from the Blue Flag bay, with lifeguards, watersports and family hotels all within walking distance. Couples wanting a quieter base should consider Sant Tomás (1km west) for adults-only Sol Beach House Menorca, or the eastern Atalis end near the 5th-century basilica.
