Travel Guide

Meloneras is the polished western end of Gran Canaria's south-coast tourist strip, sitting just past the 1889 Maspalomas lighthouse in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Built almost entirely from the late 1990s onwards, it's the newest and most upmarket of the southern resorts — five-star hotels, designer shopping, Thalasso spas and a 2km landscaped seafront promenade replace the 1960s apartment blocks of neighbouring Playa del Inglés. The resort lies 32km south of Las Palmas, 30 minutes by taxi from Gran Canaria Airport (LPA). UK travellers come here for genuine luxury at lower prices than the Algarve or Côte d'Azur, paired with reliable 21°C winter sun and a 4hr 30min flight from London.

✨ Why Visit Meloneras

  • Gran Canaria's highest concentration of five-star hotels — Lopesan Costa Meloneras, H10 Meloneras Palace, Riu Palace Meloneras and Seaside Palm Beach all sit within a 1km strip.
  • Designer shopping on the seafront — Boulevard El Faro houses Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, alongside terrace restaurants overlooking the promenade.
  • A 2km grass-edged promenade — landscaped, lit and continuous from Playa de Meloneras to the Faro lighthouse, with no traffic and no high-rise apartment blocks.
  • Two of Spain's leading Thalassotherapy centres — Corallium Thalasso (Lopesan Villa del Conde) and Despacio Spa (H10 Meloneras Palace).
  • Direct UK access year-round — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways fly into Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), 30km away.
  • One of Europe's most reliable winter-sun climates — January averages 21°C, with seven hours of sunshine a day and sea temperatures around 20°C.

🌴 What Makes It Special

Unlike its 1960s-built neighbour Playa del Inglés — purpose-engineered for mass package tourism — Meloneras was master-planned in the 1990s as the south coast's quality answer. There are no mid-rise apartment blocks, no shopping-centre touts and no dedicated nightlife strips. Instead, you get manicured boulevards, a beach with no high-rise behind it, and ExpoMeloneras hosting opera and conferences rather than club nights. Compared to Marbella's Golden Mile or the Algarve's Quinta do Lago, Meloneras delivers the same five-star resort comfort at noticeably lower prices and with a guaranteed winter season — the Algarve effectively closes from November to March, while Meloneras runs at full strength through January and February.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Boulevard El Faro & the seafront promenade — Designer boutiques, terrace restaurants and the sunset-facing strip running east to the lighthouse.
  • Playa de Meloneras — A 600m wind-protected fine-grey-sand beach with calm water and sunbed hire from €4.
  • Boulevard Oasis (inland strip) — The casual back-of-resort plaza with the Lopesan Baobab Resort, an outdoor cinema and family-friendly restaurants.
  • Faro de Maspalomas — The 55m white lighthouse marking the eastern boundary, surrounded by the resort's most photographed terraces.
  • ExpoMeloneras & the Casino — The conference auditorium and Gran Casino Costa Meloneras anchor the resort's evening programme.
  • Pasito Blanco (just west) — A working fishing marina 5km along the coast, with day-trip boats and seafood restaurants on the dockside.

A resort built around the polished end of a holiday — long lunches, sunset cocktails and a spa booking on most afternoons.

🏖️ Beaches

  • Playa de Meloneras (resort centre) — fine grey sand, calm bay protected by low cliffs, family-friendly entry
  • Playa de Maspalomas (10 min east on foot) — 6km of dune-backed sand starting at the Faro

  • Sunset Bay (cliff side, Meloneras) — the small rocky platform below Blue Marlin Ibiza, beach-club only

  • The Boulevard Oasis open-air cinema — Europe's only year-round permanent outdoor screen

📸 Instagram-Worthy Spots

  • The Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse at blue hour, framed by the boulevard's palms
  • The colonial-arched façade of Lopesan Costa Meloneras, modelled on a Cuban hacienda
  • The La Charca de Maspalomas lagoon at sunset, with flamingos and herons in residence
  • The Punta Mujeres archaeological ruins — pre-Hispanic circular dwellings on the cliff edge
  • The infinity-edge palm pool of Lopesan Baobab Resort, the resort's most-photographed pool

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Meloneras is one of the few European luxury strips where premium all-inclusive is the norm rather than the exception. Lopesan Costa Meloneras, Lopesan Baobab Resort and Riu Palace Meloneras all offer five-star AI with multiple à la carte restaurants. UK packages with flights typically open from £649pp in May or October shoulder season, climbing to £1,299pp at February half-term — comfortably above Playa del Inglés but still below comparable Algarve or Sardinia prices.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

The grass-edged promenade is buggy-friendly end to end and the calm, wind-protected Playa de Meloneras suits younger swimmers. Lopesan Baobab Resort, themed on an African savannah with twin lagoon pools, and H10 Meloneras Palace hold the strongest family scores. Add Aqualand Maspalomas (10 minutes), Holiday World (5 minutes) and Palmitos Park (20 minutes) for a full family week.

💎 Luxury Holidays

This is where Gran Canaria's luxury inventory concentrates. Seaside Palm Beach (designed by Alberto Pinto, with peacocks roaming the lobby gardens and Leading Hotels of the World status) sits at the boulevard's western end. Bohemia Suites & Spa in adjoining Playa del Inglés caters to adults-only couples. Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia in Maspalomas — the only Relais & Châteaux property in the Canaries — is 10 minutes east.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Late discounts are uncommon during the December–February winter-sun peak, when European luxury travellers fill the Lopesan and Riu inventories at full rate. The strongest savings appear mid-May to mid-June and from late September into early October — discounts of 20–25% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on five-star half-board.

📅 Best Time to Visit Meloneras

Meloneras runs at full strength year-round, but the texture of each season differs. December to March is the headline UK winter-sun window — 21–23°C daytime highs, sea temperatures of 19–20°C, and the resort's busiest cultural calendar (carnival in February, opera at ExpoMeloneras through spring). April to June and October to November are the value-strong shoulder months at 24–27°C. July and August reach 28–30°C, occasionally dusted with Saharan calima haze. The Atlantic trade winds keep evenings cooler than the Costas year-round; pack a light layer for sunset on the boulevard.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Lopesan Baobab Resort, H10 Meloneras Palace
  • Couples: Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa, Lopesan Villa del Conde
  • Luxury travellers: Seaside Palm Beach (adjacent Maspalomas), Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia
  • Budget travellers: Vital Suites Residencia, Tabaiba Princess (just north on the GC-500)
  • Golfers & spa lovers: Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity (10km north), Riu Palace Meloneras

🚗 Getting Around

The resort itself is walkable — end to end is 25 minutes on the seafront promenade. Global runs the public buses; lines 66 and 90 connect Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) to the Faro and Maspalomas stops in 35–45 minutes for €3.50. A taxi from the airport is around €40 and takes 30 minutes via the GC-1 motorway. Cicar and PlusCar handle local hire from €25 a day if you're heading inland — the GC-503 climbs into the central mountains and reaches Tejeda and Roque Nublo in under an hour.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Canary Islands run on UK time year-round (GMT in winter, BST in summer) — no jet lag.
  • IGIC sales tax is 7% versus mainland Spain's 21% — perfumes, cosmetics and spirits are noticeably cheaper.
  • Dinner reservations at Kaori, 360° and Las Rías are essential in winter peak.
  • Tap water is desalinated and technically safe; locals stick to bottled.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Sunset tables on the boulevard turn over from around 18:30 in winter to 21:00 in summer; arrive 30 minutes early to claim a sea-facing seat.
