Travel Guide

Puerto Rico is a south-west Gran Canaria resort built into a deep, sun-trap valley 15km west of Maspalomas, in the municipality of Mogán. It was developed from a fishing harbour in the 1970s and now wraps a sandy bay between two marinas, with whitewashed apartment terraces climbing the surrounding hillsides. The resort holds two beaches — its own golden-sand bay at the marina mouth and the calmer Playa de Amadores 1.4km west, linked by a cliff-top promenade. UK travellers come here for some of Gran Canaria's most sheltered swimming water, the densest concentration of boat trips on the island, and the south coast's strongest microclimate — Puerto Rico typically records 10–15 more sunny days a year than Maspalomas, thanks to its valley topography.

✨ Why Visit Puerto Rico

  • The sunniest microclimate on the island — sheltered by mountains on three sides, Puerto Rico typically records more sunshine hours than anywhere else on Gran Canaria.
  • Two distinct beaches within a 1.4km walk — the main Playa de Puerto Rico for buzz, Playa de Amadores for calmer, dyke-protected water.
  • The boat-trip capital of the Canaries — dolphin-watching, fishing trips, parasailing, jet ski hire and ferries to Mogán all leave from the same harbour.
  • Family-friendly bay swimming — Playa de Amadores has held Blue Flag status since 2004, with no watersports allowed and amphibious chairs for disabled visitors.
  • Mogán Mall on the doorstep — the south coast's biggest open-air shopping centre, with 100+ shops and a weekend cybernetic fountain show, opened in 2019.
  • Direct UK flights all year — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways all run year-round routes to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), 30km east.

🌴 What Makes It Special

Unlike Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, where the dunes and the sheer scale dominate, Puerto Rico is built on a smaller, more contained scale — every hotel is within 15 minutes' walk of one of the two beaches, and the marina is the social heart. Unlike polished Meloneras, there are no five-star Lopesan flagships here; this is a mid-market resort built for family holidays and active days on the water. And unlike Puerto de Mogán next door, which trades on quiet pastel charm, Puerto Rico delivers a busier, more international atmosphere with more bars, more boat operators and reliably warm swimming water from December through March, when the south-east coast can feel windier.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Puerto Rico Marina (Puerto Base) — The harbour at the heart of the resort, home to dolphin tours, the yellow submarine and ferries to Mogán.
  • Playa de Puerto Rico — A 350m crescent of golden sand at the marina mouth, with sunbeds from €4 and a sheltered bay.
  • Playa de Amadores — A man-made 800m horseshoe cove 1.4km west, dyke-protected for the calmest water on the south coast.
  • Puerto Rico Shopping Centre — The original 1970s commercial heart, restaurants, bars and the bus station.
  • Mogán Mall — A modern 100-store open-air mall opened in 2019, with a weekend musical fountain show.
  • Anfi del Mar (5km east) — A separate Caribbean-themed resort with imported white sand and a heart-shaped artificial island.

A south-west sun trap built around a marina — most days here split between a beach in the morning and a boat in the afternoon.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Puerto Rico is a strong all-inclusive market, with Servatur Puerto Azul, Marina Bayview, Cordial Mogán Valle and the family-aimed Servatur Waikiki offering UK-friendly buffets and themed à la carte nights. Shoulder-season weeks with flights typically open from £459pp in May or October, climbing to £899pp at February half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

The resort handles family holidays well — calm Amadores swimming, the yellow submarine, ferries to Mogán and a 25-minute transfer from LPA. Marina Bayview and Cordial Mogán Valle lead the family rankings; pair with Aqualand Maspalomas (25 minutes east) and Palmitos Park (20 minutes inland) for a full week's entertainment.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Puerto Rico has just two true five-star addresses: the cliff-perched Gloria Palace Royal above Amadores beach, with thalassotherapy treatments and Atlantic balconies, and the all-suite Radisson Blu Resort & Spa down the coast at Puerto de Mogán. For a more polished pairing, base in Meloneras (15 minutes east) and day-trip to Puerto Rico for the boats.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Genuine late deals are uncommon in the December–February winter-sun peak, when Scandinavian long-stay visitors fill the inventory. The strongest discounts surface mid-May to mid-June and from late September into early October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Servatur and Cordial properties.

📅 Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico's sheltered south-west valley delivers the most reliable sunshine on Gran Canaria, with no genuinely off month. December to March is the headline UK winter-sun window — 21–23°C daytime highs, sea temperatures of 19–20°C, and Scandinavian and German long-stay travellers filling the resort. April to June and October to November are the value-strong shoulder months at 24–27°C with thinner crowds. July and August reach 28–30°C with occasional Saharan calima dust hazes. The valley shape means evenings in Puerto Rico are noticeably warmer than open-coast Maspalomas year-round.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Marina Bayview, Servatur Waikiki
  • Couples: Gloria Palace Royal (Amadores), Cordial Mogán Valle
  • Luxury travellers: Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa, Radisson Blu Resort Gran Canaria (Puerto de Mogán, 5km west)
  • Budget travellers: Servatur Green Beach, Riosol Apartments
  • Boat-trip & active travellers: Bull Eugenia Victoria & Spa, Marina Suites (above the harbour)

🚗 Getting Around

The resort itself is compact, but the valley topography means a lot of stairs — bring decent walking shoes if your hotel sits on the upper terraces. Global runs the public buses; line 1 connects Puerto Rico to Las Palmas in 90 minutes for €8.55, line 91 to Maspalomas in 25 minutes for €3.05. A taxi from Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is around €40 and takes 35 minutes via the GC-1 motorway. Lineas Salmón runs the regular ferry to Puerto de Mogán in 30 minutes (€11 single) and on to Arguineguín. Cicar and PlusCar handle local hire from €25 a day.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Canary Islands run on UK time year-round (GMT in winter, BST in summer) — no jet lag.
  • IGIC sales tax is 7% versus mainland Spain's 21% — perfumes, cosmetics and spirits are noticeably cheaper.
  • Many hotels are perched on the valley sides; check listings for "lower town" if mobility matters.
  • Tap water is desalinated and technically safe; locals stick to bottled.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • The dolphin-watching operators offer free repeat sailings if no sightings — check this is included before booking.
  • The cliff-top path to Amadores has no shade; carry water and walk it before 11am or after 4pm in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

December to March is the headline UK winter-sun window, with 22–23°C highs and the warmest sheltered swimming on Gran Canaria. May, June, September and October offer the best value-weather combination at 25–28°C, with thinner Scandinavian crowds and softer hotel rates.
Yes — particularly Playa de Amadores, which has held Blue Flag status since 2004 and is dyke-protected with no watersports. The yellow submarine, dolphin-spotting catamarans and the ferry to Puerto de Mogán give children different boat-based days, and the 25-minute transfer from LPA keeps travel days short.
Direct flights to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) take 4 hours 30 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted or Luton, rising to 4 hours 50 minutes from Edinburgh or Glasgow. The transfer to Puerto Rico is 35 minutes by taxi (around €40) via the GC-1 motorway.
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in the resort, but small cash is useful for taxi fares, sunbed hire (€4 per set) and the Friday Mogán market. ATMs are widespread; airport exchange-counter rates are usually poor.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Puerto Rico is mid-priced for the south coast — broadly similar to Playa del Inglés and 20–25% cheaper than Meloneras. A three-course dinner with wine averages €25–35pp, a pint is €3–4, and the 7% IGIC tax keeps spirits and electronics 15–20% below mainland Spain.
For a first visit, base near the Puerto Rico marina and main beach — you're a five-minute walk from the boat-trip operators, the bus station and the original shopping centre, and 25 minutes on foot from quieter Amadores via the cliff promenade. Couples wanting calmer water should head straight for Playa de Amadores instead.
