Travel Guide
Benalmádena is a holiday resort on Spain's Costa del Sol, in the province of Málaga, 22km west of Málaga and 18km from Málaga Airport (AGP) — the shortest mainland-Spain airport transfer of any major Costa del Sol resort. The municipality is split across three distinct towns: Benalmádena Pueblo, the whitewashed Andalusian original village 280m up in the hills; Arroyo de la Miel, the modern central town with the cable car, train station and main shopping district; and Benalmádena Costa, the seafront resort strip with Puerto Marina, the bulk of the hotel inventory and a 9km Blue Flag coastline divided into 15 beaches. UK travellers come for direct flights into Málaga from over 25 airports, low-cost mid-market hotels, the cable car and Buddhist stupa cultural draws, and one of Spain's most reliable year-round climates — Benalmádena averages 17°C in winter and 30°C in peak August.
✨ Why Visit Benalmádena
- Three resorts in one — Benalmádena Pueblo (whitewashed Andalusian village), Arroyo de la Miel (modern town) and Benalmádena Costa (beach-and-marina strip) make up a single municipality with distinct flavours.
- Puerto Marina, voted "Best Marina in the World" — opened in 1982 with Spanish-Moorish architecture across artificial islands, hosting 1,000+ moorings, Sea Life aquarium and the marina-side nightlife.
- Mount Calamorro cable car — at 769m, Andalusia's only commercial cable car, with 360° Mediterranean views from Gibraltar to Africa on clear days.
- The largest Buddhist stupa in the West — the 33m Stupa of Enlightenment (2003) stands above Benalmádena Pueblo, free to enter and a unique Costa del Sol cultural draw.
- A 22km year-round climate — Benalmádena averages 17°C in January and 30°C in August, working as both a summer-sun and winter-sun destination.
- Direct UK flights into Málaga from 25+ airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair, British Airways and Wizz Air, 2hr 50min from London Gatwick.
🌴 What Makes Benalmádena Special
Unlike Marbella to the west, Benalmádena keeps the Costa del Sol's polished beach-resort experience at a notably lower price point — pints from €3–4, three-course dinners from €25pp, and mid-range hotels from £229pp shoulder season. Unlike Torremolinos to the east, Benalmádena's three-town structure gives it cultural depth that the resort-only neighbours lack — Benalmádena Pueblo's whitewashed village still operates as a working Andalusian community, with the Arab souk in September and the Carnival drag-queen contest in February. And unlike most Spanish coastal resorts, Benalmádena runs at full strength year-round — January temperatures of 17°C, the UK's largest expat community (around 5,000 British residents) keeping bars and restaurants open through winter, and direct flights into Málaga seven days a week. The combination of cable car, Buddhist stupa, world-class marina and three-town variety makes Benalmádena one of mainland Spain's most rounded mid-market resorts.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays
Benalmádena runs the Costa del Sol's deepest UK family AI market, with Sunset Beach Club, Holiday World Resort (themed family resort), Best Benalmádena and Riu Costa Lago leading the UK rankings. Ramada Resort by Wyndham Costa del Sol and Hotel Las Palmeras Affiliated by Meliá add the upper-tier family AI options. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £279pp in May or October, climbing to £849pp at August half-term.
👨👩👧👦 Family Holidays
This is one of the Costa del Sol's strongest family resorts. The 9km Blue Flag coastline divided into 15 separate beaches handles families well, Holiday World Resort is themed entirely around children with multiple pools and a kids' club, and the cable car, Stupa of Enlightenment, Sea Life aquarium and Selwo Marina dolphin park fill non-beach days. The Castillo de Colomares "castle" and Parque de la Paloma deliver free family activities.
💎 Luxury Holidays
Higuerón Resort in the Reserva del Higuerón cliff-top zone is the headline luxury address — Curio Collection by Hilton, with two hotels, a spa, infinity pools and Mediterranean views. Vincci Selección Aleysa Boutique & Spa (5-star adults-only on Playa de Caleta de Vélez) and the Hotel Hilton Garden Inn Málaga (15 minutes east, Málaga city) round out the area's luxury inventory. For wider Costa del Sol five-stars, Marbella Club and Puente Romano are 35 minutes west.
⏰ Last-Minute Deals
Benalmádena carries the strongest late-availability stock on the Costa del Sol thanks to its volume of family-aimed AI inventory. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from late September into late October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Sunset Beach Club, Ramada and Riu properties. Unlike most Mediterranean resorts, a meaningful core of hotels stays open year-round here — November to February deals are achievable on the expat-driven sector.

📅 Best Time to Visit Benalmádena
Benalmádena is one of the most year-round-able resorts in mainland Spain. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 22–24°C and the marina, beaches and waterparks at full capacity. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper hotel rates and the cable car and Stupa at their best. April and October still deliver 19–23°C, with the sea around 17–19°C — pleasant for walking and culture-led couples but cool for swimming. Winter (November to March) holds at 16–18°C with five hours of sunshine a day — ideal for golf, hiking and cultural day trips, with winter-sun demand from UK over-55s keeping a meaningful core of hotels open.

🚗 Getting Around
The 18km transfer from Málaga Airport (AGP) is among Spain's shortest — taxis cost around €30 and take 20 minutes via the AP-7 motorway, or €40 to Benalmádena Pueblo. The Cercanías C-1 commuter train runs from AGP to Arroyo de la Miel station every 20 minutes for €3.05 and is the quickest way for solo travellers. Within the resort, the local M-103 bus connects Benalmádena Pueblo to Benalmádena Costa via Arroyo de la Miel for €1.50. Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent from around €25 a day at AGP. The Cercanías train links Benalmádena to Málaga in 25 minutes (€3.05) and Fuengirola in 10 minutes — useful for day trips. The Teleférico Benalmádena cable car operates from the central Tivoli station to Mount Calamorro from 11am to 6pm daily.
