Travel Guide

Estepona is a coastal town in the western Costa del Sol, in the province of Málaga, 80km west of Málaga and 75km from Málaga Airport (AGP). Built around an 8th-century Moorish settlement, the town wraps a 21km Mediterranean coastline at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja mountains, with the wild Reserva del Higuerón to the east and the marina of Puerto Banús (Marbella's flagship harbour) 12km west. The Old Town's whitewashed flower-pot-lined lanes and the modern 21km coastal promenade have earned Estepona the nickname "Jardín de la Costa del Sol" ("Garden of the Costa del Sol"). Tourism arrived later here than in Torremolinos or Benalmádena — Estepona kept its low-rise Andalusian character better than its eastern neighbours, with no high-rise apartment blocks dominating the seafront. UK travellers come for direct flights into Málaga, calmer family beaches than the Costa del Sol's busier eastern resorts, the murals trail and a more genuinely Spanish coastal-town feel.

✨ Why Visit Estepona

  • The Costa del Sol's longest coastal promenade — a 21km traffic-free seafront walkway connecting Estepona's beaches end-to-end, longer than Torremolinos's 7km and Fuengirola's 7km combined.
  • The Ruta de los Murales — 60+ commissioned large-scale murals across the Old Town, transforming Estepona into Spain's largest open-air gallery.
  • A working low-rise Andalusian town — strict planning rules cap most central buildings at four storeys, preserving the whitewashed character.
  • Europe's largest orchid greenhouse — the 1,000 m² Orchidarium opened in 2015 with the world's tallest indoor waterfall at 17m.
  • The "Garden of the Costa del Sol" — flower-pot-lined Calle del Amargura and Calle Caridad rank among Spain's most-photographed Old Town streets.
  • Direct UK flights into Málaga from 25+ airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair, British Airways and Wizz Air, 2hr 50min from London Gatwick.

🌴 What Makes Estepona Special

Unlike Marbella to the east, Estepona keeps the Costa del Sol's beach-resort experience at a notably lower price point — pints from €4, three-course dinners from €30pp and packages from £279pp shoulder season. Unlike Torremolinos or Benalmádena further east, Estepona has actively invested in cultural identity rather than mass-market tourism — the murals trail, the Orchidarium, the Old Town's flower-pot streets and the strict low-rise planning code have created a Costa del Sol resort that genuinely feels different. And unlike anywhere else on the coast, Estepona pairs a 21km beach promenade with the Sierra Bermeja mountains rising directly behind — providing both seafront flat walking and serious hill-walking to the Pico Reales summit at 1,449m. The combination of Andalusian Old Town charm, the longest beach promenade on the coast, the headline murals trail and easy access to both Marbella's polish and Gibraltar's curiosity makes Estepona the most rounded west-coast Costa del Sol resort.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Old Town (Casco Antiguo) — The 8th-century Moorish whitewashed quarter, with the Plaza de las Flores, Calle del Carmen, Calle del Amargura and the Ruta de los Murales mural trail.
  • Puerto Deportivo de Estepona — A 447-berth marina at the western end of the seafront, with restaurants, sailing yachts and the dolphin-watching boat operators.
  • Playa La Rada — The 2.6km central Blue Flag beach running directly along the Old Town seafront.
  • Playa del Cristo — A small protected sandy cove just west of the marina, ideal for younger swimmers.
  • Avenida España — The seafront promenade running through the centre of town, lined with palm trees and chiringuitos.
  • El Calvario & Calle Terraza — The northern hill quarter with the Orchidarium, hilltop chapels and the Plaza de Toros bullring.
  • Selwo Aventura (4km north) — The 100-hectare safari park inland in the Sierra Bermeja foothills.
  • Puerto Banús (12km east) — Marbella's celebrity yacht marina, the regional luxury and shopping hub.
  • Sierra Bermeja (north) — The mountains rising directly behind the resort, with hiking trails to Pico Reales (1,449m).

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Estepona runs a more refined AI market than the Costa del Sol's busier eastern resorts, with Hotel H10 Estepona Palace, Iberostar Selection Marbella Coral Beach (5km east) and Globales Cortijo Blanco (Marbella) leading the UK family rankings. Pierre & Vacances Estepona and Sol Marbella Estepona add the apart-hotel and value AI options. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £349pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

The 21km coastal promenade is buggy-friendly end-to-end and the Playa La Rada gradually shelves into the Mediterranean with lifeguards in summer. Iberostar Selection Marbella Coral Beach and Pierre & Vacances Estepona lead the family inventory. Pair with Selwo Aventura safari park (4km north), the Orchidarium, the dolphin-spotting catamarans and the murals trail for a full family week. The smaller Playa del Cristo cove suits under-fives particularly well.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Kempinski Hotel Bahía Estepona (cliff-top adults-only, opened 1999, set in 28,000 m² of subtropical gardens) is the headline luxury address. Ikos Andalusia (a 2024-opened all-inclusive five-star with the Greek-luxury group's signature dining programme) sits 5km west of central Estepona and ranks among Europe's leading family AI five-stars. Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa (12km east at Casares, Forbes 5-Star) offers the headline boutique-luxury alternative. Marbella Club and Puente Romano (Marbella, 18km east) are the closest Costa del Sol heritage five-stars.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Estepona carries solid late-availability stock outside the August peak. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from late September into late October — discounts of 20–25% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on H10, Pierre & Vacances and Sol properties. The town's small core of expat-led restaurants stays open year-round, so winter trips are possible — though most beach hotels close November to March.

📅 Best Time to Visit Estepona

Estepona runs as a year-round destination thanks to its 320 sunny days a year. Peak season is mid-July to mid-September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 22–24°C, and the beach, Selwo Aventura and the marina restaurants at full capacity. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–28°C with cheaper hotel rates and the Sierra Bermeja hiking at its best. April and October still deliver 19–23°C, with the sea at 17–19°C — pleasant for the murals trail and the Old Town walks. Winter (November to March) holds at 17–19°C with 5+ hours of daily sunshine — Estepona works as a UK winter-sun destination, with golf and walking taking over from beach activity.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Iberostar Selection Marbella Coral Beach, Hotel H10 Estepona Palace, Pierre & Vacances Estepona
  • Couples: Kempinski Hotel Bahía Estepona (adults-only luxury), Ikos Andalusia (all-inclusive five-star)
  • Luxury travellers: Kempinski Hotel Bahía Estepona, Ikos Andalusia, Finca Cortesin Hotel, Golf & Spa (12km east)

🚗 Getting Around

The 75km transfer from Málaga Airport (AGP) is one of the longest of any major Costa del Sol resort — taxis cost around €100 and take 60 minutes via the AP-7 motorway. Cicar, OK Mobility and Record Go rent cars from around €25 a day at AGP. The M-220 and M-221 buses connect Estepona to Marbella in 25 minutes for €2.45 and on to Málaga in 80 minutes for €7. Within the resort, the seafront promenade is fully walkable end-to-end (21km) and the Old Town is compact and entirely walkable. Estepona has no train station — the Cercanías C-1 line ends at Fuengirola, 35km east, so the AP-7 motorway is the practical route. The marina hosts the dolphin-watching catamarans and a small Mediterranean ferry to Tangier, Morocco (3 hours each way) in summer.

💡 Travel Tips

  • Mainland Spain runs Central European Time — one hour ahead of the UK year-round.
  • Spanish IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Andalusia does not currently charge a tourist tax — unlike the Balearics.
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • Estepona has no train station; the AP-7 motorway is the quickest route from Málaga Airport.
  • The Tuesday Estepona market and Sunday Plaza Antonia Guerrero market both run 9am to 2pm — go before 11am for the best selection.
  • Ruta de los Murales walking maps are free at the Tourist Office on Plaza de las Flores.
  • Restaurants in Spain typically don't fill until 9pm — book ahead at marina terraces in summer.
  • Sardine espetos (skewers) are best from May to October — the cooler-water months produce smaller, less flavourful fish.
  • Selwo Aventura summer evening "twilight" tickets (after 6pm) are €5 cheaper, with the animals more active in the cooler hours.
  • Gibraltar (1hr 15min west by car) offers a useful day trip to a UK-British territory; UK passport holders can enter Gibraltar without further visa requirements.

Yes — the 21km flat coastal promenade is buggy-friendly end-to-end, the central Playa La Rada has lifeguards in summer, and Selwo Aventura safari park (4km north), the Orchidarium and the dolphin-spotting catamarans cover non-beach days. The smaller Playa del Cristo cove is calmer for under-fives. Iberostar Selection Marbella Coral Beach and Hotel H10 Estepona Palace lead the family hotel inventory.
Direct flights to Málaga Airport (AGP) take 2 hours 50 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 3 hours 15 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The transfer to Estepona is 60 minutes by taxi (€100) via the AP-7 motorway — one of the longer Costa del Sol transfers, with no train alternative.
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in resort areas, with most contactless. Carry small cash for the Sunday and Wednesday markets, taxis, sunbed hire (€4 a set) and beach-bar drinks. ATMs are widespread along Avenida España and around Plaza de las Flores.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Estepona is mid-priced for the western Costa del Sol — typically 25–30% above Torremolinos and Benalmádena, but 20–25% cheaper than Marbella. A pint runs €4–5, a three-course dinner with wine averages €30–40pp, and Andalusia does not charge a tourist tax. Kempinski Bahía Estepona, Ikos Andalusia and Finca Cortesin are the headline premium spends.
For a first visit, base in or near the Old Town (Casco Antiguo) — you wake up at the start of the murals trail, 5 minutes from Playa La Rada, and 10 minutes' walk from Puerto Deportivo. Couples wanting more boutique character should consider the cliff-top Kempinski or Mim Estepona; families wanting the calmest water should choose hotels near Playa del Cristo west of the marina.
