Travel Guide
Alcúdia is a town and resort on the north-east coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of the same name, 60km north of Palma and 55km from Palma Airport (PMI). It is one of the few Mallorcan resorts with genuine historical depth — the original Roman city of Pollentia was founded here in 123 BC, the medieval walled town was raised in the 14th century, and the entire historic centre still sits inside the original stone fortifications. Modern tourism wraps two distinct zones: the cultural Alcúdia Old Town inland, and the resort strip of Port d'Alcúdia on the bay, which morphs south into Playa de Muro to give Mallorca its longest single stretch of beach at 10km combined. UK travellers come for the soft white sand, family-focused all-inclusive infrastructure, the S'Albufera wetlands and one of the few Mallorcan resorts that pairs beach with serious cultural depth.
✨ Why Visit Alcúdia
- Mallorca's longest beach — Playa d'Alcúdia and Playa de Muro combine to give 10km of continuous fine white sand, all gradually shelving into the bay.
- A 14th-century walled medieval old town — fully preserved stone fortifications, Tuesday and Sunday markets, and the original Porta de Sant Sebastià and Porta de Mallorca gateways.
- Roman ruins inside the resort — the Pollentia archaeological site and Museu Monogràfic deliver 2,000-year-old foundations and a rock-cut amphitheatre, 5 minutes from the beach.
- The S'Albufera wetlands on the doorstep — Mallorca's largest natural park at 1,700 hectares, with over 300 recorded bird species and free public access.
- Family-resort scale — Port d'Alcúdia and Playa de Muro between them hold one of Mallorca's deepest concentrations of family-aimed all-inclusive hotels.
- Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.
🌴 What Makes Alcúdia Special
Unlike Magaluf or Santa Ponsa, where the resort identity is built around a single Blue Flag bay and a nightlife strip, Alcúdia delivers a genuine two-part holiday: a 14th-century walled medieval town inland and a 10km beach resort on the coast. Unlike Palma's compact city break, Alcúdia gives you the family beach and a full cycling network — the Playa de Muro segregated lanes are the most extensive on the island. And unlike Cala d'Or or Cala Millor on the east coast, Alcúdia's bay is sheltered by the Formentor peninsula on one side and the Cap des Pinar headland on the other, making the water unusually calm for an open-sea bay. The combination of Roman foundations, medieval walls, wetlands, watersports, golf, cycling and a 10km beach is the broadest package in any Mallorcan resort.
📍 Key Areas to Explore
- Alcúdia Old Town (Casc Antic) — The 14th-century walled medieval centre, with the Tuesday and Sunday markets, the Pollentia ruins and a network of artisan workshops.
- Port d'Alcúdia — The main resort strip on the bay, with the marina, watersports operators, hotels and the family entertainment district along Avinguda Pere Mas i Reus.
- Playa de Muro (south) — The longer, quieter, pine-backed half of the beach, fronting the upmarket family-resort cluster.
- Cap des Pinar (north) — A military-protected headland with the Mirador de la Victoria viewpoint and the 13th-century Ermita de la Victoria hermitage.
- S'Albufera Natural Park — The 1,700-hectare wetland reserve immediately south of Port d'Alcúdia, with five waymarked trails.
- Mal Pas & Bonaire (north) — A small marina-side residential cluster between Alcúdia Old Town and Cap des Pinar.
- Cap de Formentor (north) — Mallorca's wild northern peninsula, 30km north, with the 1863 lighthouse and the cliff-edge Mirador des Colomer.

Iberostar Albufera Park, Iberostar Albufera Playa, Zafiro Palace Alcúdia and Grupotel Parc Natural & Spa lead the family rankings, with Hotel Sun Beach and Globales Playa Estepona at the value end. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £349pp in May or October, climbing to £999pp at August half-term.
👨👩👧👦 Family Holidays
This is one of Mallorca's strongest family resorts. The 10km gradually-shelving Blue Flag bay, the segregated cycle network, HiPark Aquapark, Western Water Park (40 minutes south) and the family-aimed Zafiro Palace Alcúdia with its multi-pool swim-up suites all combine well. The S'Albufera wetlands and the Pollentia Roman ruins add genuine educational variety for school-age children.
💎 Luxury Holidays
The headline luxury inventory is Zafiro Palace Alcúdia — a multi-restaurant five-star complex with swim-up suites, panoramic rooftop spa rooms and direct beach access. Grupotel Parc Natural & Spa, set inside the S'Albufera Natural Park, offers a boutique nature-led alternative. VIVA Cala Mesquida Resort & Spa (45 minutes south, adults-only) and Hotel Mar Brava (Mal Pas, family-run boutique) round out the inventory. For headline Mallorcan five-star, Belmond La Residencia in Deià is an hour south-west.
⏰ Last-Minute Deals
Alcúdia carries solid late-availability stock outside July and August. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Iberostar, Grupotel, Zafiro and Globales properties. Many Playa de Muro hotels close from late October to early April, so winter deals aren't a feature here.

📅 Best Time to Visit Alcúdia
Alcúdia runs as a summer-season family resort, with most hotels open from late March to early November. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the bay at its busiest. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with cheaper rates and the cycling routes at their best. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit walkers, cyclists and culture-led couples — the Old Town and the Pollentia Roman ruins reward off-season visits when crowds thin. Most hotels close from early November through March; the Old Town itself stays open year-round.

🚗 Getting Around
The 55km transfer from Palma Airport (PMI) is one of Mallorca's longest — taxis cost around €80 and take 50 minutes via the Ma-13 motorway. The TIB A42 Aerotib bus runs direct from PMI to Alcúdia for €15 in 75 minutes, making it cost-effective for groups. Within the resort, the bay-side promenade is fully walkable end to end, and the segregated cycle network is the most extensive on the island. For day trips to the Tramuntana mountains, Sa Calobra or Sóller, hire a car from Cicar from around €25 a day. TIB bus 311 connects Alcúdia to Palma in 70 minutes for €8.

- Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
