Travel Guide

Santa Ponsa is a long-established holiday resort on the south-west coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Calvià, 20km west of Palma and 25km from Palma Airport (PMI). The town takes its name from a Roman villa called Sancta Pontia, and earned its place in Spanish history on 12 September 1229, when King James I of Aragon landed at Sa Caleta to begin the Christian conquest of Mallorca — a moment marked by the large stone cross that still stands above the marina. Modern tourism arrived in the early 1960s, and unlike neighbouring Magaluf, Santa Ponsa has largely avoided high-rise development; the bay is fringed instead by villas, mid-rise apartment buildings and, on the rocky headlands, second homes belonging to wealthy Europeans. UK travellers come for the family-friendly 1.3km Blue Flag bay, three championship golf courses, the year-round expat community keeping restaurants open in winter, and a 25-minute airport transfer.

✨ Why Visit Santa Ponsa

  • A 1.3km Blue Flag bay — soft white sand divided by a pine-tree shaded park grove, with calm water sheltered by rocky headlands on both sides.
  • Three championship golf courses — Golf Santa Ponsa I, II and III, with the par-72 Course I host of the historic Balearics Open and the par-5 Hole 5 once Spain's longest at 593m.
  • Genuine year-round opening — a steady expat community keeps restaurants and bars trading through the winter, unlike Magaluf which closes from November to February.
  • The historic Rei en Jaume cross — Sa Caleta is where the Christian conquest of Mallorca began in 1229, marked by the stone cross since 1929.
  • A 25-minute airport transfer — direct A11 Aerotib bus from Palma Airport (PMI) for €5, or a €30 taxi.
  • Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.

🌴 What Makes Santa Ponsa Special

Unlike Magaluf, where Punta Ballena's strip dominates the resort identity, Santa Ponsa runs on a calmer, more rounded mix — the nightlife concentrates on the short Carrer Ramon de Montcada strip but rarely runs past 2am, kitchens stay open later than Palma Nova, and the bay itself is wider and quieter than either neighbour. Unlike Alcúdia 60km north, Santa Ponsa has a 25-minute airport transfer and direct walkability to Magaluf for nightlife-led day trips. And unlike Puerto Portals 5km east — Mallorca's celebrity yacht marina — Santa Ponsa keeps the price point firmly mid-range, with €4 pints and €25 paellas. The trio of championship golf courses pulls in a serious senior and shoulder-season market that keeps the resort trading from March through November, with a winter expat community holding the rest of the year together.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Playa de Santa Ponsa (main bay) — The 1.3km Blue Flag headline beach, with a flat seafront promenade, sunbed hire and the central pine-tree park grove.
  • Sa Caleta & the Marina — The southern marina cove where King James I landed in 1229, marked by the Rei en Jaume stone cross and now ringed with sailing-yacht moorings.
  • Caló d'en Pellicer — A small quieter sand-and-rock cove south of the main beach, locals' favourite and rarely crowded.
  • Carrer Ramon de Montcada (the strip) — The resort's short main nightlife street, with Irish bars, live-music venues, karaoke pubs and a few late-2am clubs.
  • The Square (Plaza Santa Ponça) — The pedestrianised plaza with restaurants, the Rei en Jaume monument and free family entertainment most summer evenings.
  • Costa de la Calma (just south) — A quieter residential cliff-edge zone with the Mirador de les Malgrats viewpoint and Cala Blanca cove.
  • Port Adriano (3km east) — Philippe Starck-designed luxury marina with high-end restaurants, Pure Salt boutique hotel and superyacht moorings.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Santa Ponsa runs a strong family AI market, with Pirates Village (themed family resort opposite the strip), Globales Santa Ponsa Park and Bahia Principe Sunlight Coral Playa leading the UK family rankings. Iberostar Jardín del Sol Suites (adults-only) and Hotel Rei del Mediterrani Palace handle the couples segment. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £329pp in May or October, climbing to £929pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

This is where Santa Ponsa earns its reputation. The 1.3km gradually-shelving Blue Flag bay with lifeguards, the pine-tree shaded park grove, Pirates Village hotel with daily kids' shows and themed pools, and Jungle Parc treetop adventure 5 minutes inland make this a complete family proposition. Free buses run from Santa Ponsa to Western Water Park and Aqualand El Arenal in summer, and the Pirates Adventure dinner show (Magaluf, 10 minutes away) is a fixed family fixture.

💎 Luxury Holidays

The headline luxury inventory sits 3km east at Port Adriano, where the Philippe Starck-designed marina hosts Pure Salt Port Adriano — adults-only, with swim-up rooms and the Adriana Restaurant. Castillo Hotel Son Vida (10km east, set in 200 acres of pine forest above Palma) is the other south-west five-star option. Within Santa Ponsa itself, Hotel Rei del Mediterrani Palace runs the polished beachfront option, and the Tennis Academy Mallorca offers serious sports-luxury for groups.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Santa Ponsa carries solid late-availability stock outside July and August. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into late October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Globales, Bahia Principe and Iberostar properties. Unlike Magaluf, the resort stays partially open through winter — November to February deals are achievable on the year-round restaurants and a small base of expat-driven hotels.

📅 Best Time to Visit Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa runs longer than most Mallorcan resorts thanks to its expat community and golf market. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the bay at its busiest. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with cheaper hotels and the golf courses at their best playing condition. April and October still deliver 19–23°C and suit golfers and walkers, but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperature (17–19°C). Unlike Magaluf, a small core of restaurants and bars stays open from November through February.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Pirates Village (themed resort), Bahia Principe Sunlight Coral Playa, Globales Santa Ponsa Park
  • Couples: Iberostar Jardín del Sol Suites (adults-only), Hotel Rei del Mediterrani Palace
  • Luxury travellers: Pure Salt Port Adriano (3km east, adults-only), Castillo Hotel Son Vida (10km east)

🚗 Getting Around

The resort itself is fully walkable — end to end is 25 minutes on foot, with the bay-side promenade flat and buggy-friendly. The TIB A11 Aerotib bus runs direct from Palma Airport (PMI) to Santa Ponsa for €5 in 30 minutes; TIB lines 104 and 105 connect on to Magaluf, Palma Nova and Palma in 35–45 minutes. A taxi from PMI costs around €30 and takes 25 minutes via the Ma-1 motorway. For day trips to the Tramuntana mountains, Sóller or the eastern coves, hire a car from Cicar or Record Go from around €25 a day. Don't drive into Palma — leave the car and take TIB bus 104 from the resort.

Santa Ponsa is mid-priced for the south-west — broadly similar to Palma Nova and Magaluf, noticeably cheaper than next-door Port Adriano. Couples wanting more atmosphere should consider the marina end near Sa Caleta and the Rei en Jaume cross; golfers should base near the Golf Santa Ponsa I estate at the northern edge.
