Travel Guide

Cala Ratjada sits on the very north-eastern tip of Mallorca, in the municipality of Capdepera, 80km north-east of Palma and 75km from Palma Airport (PMI). The resort grew from a working fishing port — the harbour still lands daily catches at the llonja (fish market) — into one of the island's most popular family holiday destinations from the 1960s onwards, particularly with German visitors. The town wraps around its harbour and spreads across a small headland, with five distinct sandy coves within walking distance: Cala Agulla, Cala Lliteras, Sa Pedruscada, Son Moll and Cala Gat. Behind the resort sits the 14th-century medieval town of Capdepera, with its hilltop castle, and the dramatic Coves d'Artà sea caves 5km south. UK travellers come for the family-resort calm, the working-port atmosphere, the cluster of nearby beaches and the strongest concentration of cultural day-trip options on the east coast.

✨ Why Visit Cala Ratjada

  • Five distinct sandy coves within a 2km walk — Cala Agulla, Cala Lliteras, Sa Pedruscada, Son Moll and Cala Gat, all sheltered and all family-friendly.
  • The 1859 Capdepera Lighthouse — Mallorca's eastern-most point, with views to Menorca on clear days, reached by a 2km signposted clifftop path.
  • The 14th-century Castell de Capdepera — a medieval walled fortress just 3km inland, one of the best-preserved on the island.
  • A working fishing port — the harbour still operates a daily llonja (fish auction), and the dockside restaurants serve genuinely fresh catch.
  • The Coves d'Artà sea caves — Mallorca's most cathedral-like limestone cave system, 5km south at Cap Vermell, smaller and quieter than the better-known Coves del Drac.
  • Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.

🌴 What Makes Cala Ratjada Special

Unlike Cala Millor 15km south or Cala d'Or further down the east coast, Cala Ratjada was a working fishing port long before tourism arrived — and it still is one. The harbour quay carries on its daily llonja fish market every weekday morning, and the dockside restaurants serve catch landed that same day. Unlike Magaluf or Santa Ponsa, the resort runs almost entirely on family clientele, with no nightlife strip and a strong German visitor base that keeps standards high. And unlike anywhere else on the east coast, Cala Ratjada delivers a five-cove choice within a 2km walk — Cala Agulla's protected dune-backed bay, the smaller Son Moll, the family-friendly Cala Gat and two more — which gives families an unusual amount of beach variety for a small resort. The combination of a working port, five distinct coves, the medieval Capdepera fortress and the Coves d'Artà makes Cala Ratjada the most rounded family resort on Mallorca's eastern tip.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Cala Ratjada harbour & town centre — The working fishing port and main pedestrianised town, with restaurants, the llonja fish market and the Avinguda Cala Agulla shopping spine.
  • Cala Agulla (1km north) — A 500m dune-backed Blue Flag beach inside a protected nature area, the resort's main family beach.
  • Sa Pedruscada & Cala Lliteras — Two small sandy coves between the harbour and Cala Agulla, quieter than the main beaches.
  • Son Moll & Cala Gat (south) — Two small sandy coves immediately south of the harbour, with the cliff-top Sa Torre Cega estate overlooking them.
  • Sa Torre Cega — The former Joan March cliff-top estate with a sculpture garden including Moore, Rodin and Chillida pieces.
  • Capdepera town (3km inland) — The medieval hilltop town with the castle, Sunday market and Carrer Major shopping street.
  • Cala Mesquida (5km north) — A wilder, partly undeveloped beach inside a protected dune system, reached by car or boat.
  • Cap Vermell & Coves d'Artà (5km south) — The dramatic clifftop limestone cave system and the headland views.

Cala Ratjada runs a strong family AI market, with Hotel Bella Playa, Bahia de Cala Ratjada, Hotel Mar Azul and Aparthotel Esmeraldas leading the UK and German rankings. Hotel Lago Garden Apart-Suites & Spa (boutique) and Hipotels Cala Ratjada add the upper-tier options. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £319pp in May or October, climbing to £899pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

The five-cove choice gives Cala Ratjada unusual flexibility — Cala Agulla's dune-backed Blue Flag bay is the largest, with Cala Gat and Son Moll calmer for younger children. Hotel Bella Playa and Bahia de Cala Ratjada run the strongest family inventories. Pair with the Coves d'Artà cave concerts, the Capdepera fortress and the Sunday market for a full family week. The Capdepera Castle's medieval re-enactment days each summer are a fixed family fixture.

💎 Luxury Holidays

Hotel Lago Garden Apart-Suites & Spa — set in landscaped grounds 5 minutes from Cala Agulla — is the headline boutique luxury address. Park Hyatt Mallorca in nearby Canyamel (15 minutes south, set in the Canyamel Valley with Michelin-starred Tomeu dining) is the area's flagship five-star. Cap Vermell Beach Hotel at Canyamel adds a cliff-top beachfront option. Within Cala Ratjada itself, Hipotels Cala Ratjada and the boutique S'Entrador Playa are the leading mid-tier polished options.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Cala Ratjada carries strong late-availability stock outside the August peak, particularly given its longstanding German visitor base which fills bed-nights in shoulder season. 📅 Best Time to Visit Cala Ratjada

Cala Ratjada runs as a summer-season family resort, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the five coves at their busiest. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C, with cheaper hotel rates and the cliff-walks and Capdepera fortress at their best for visiting. April and October still deliver 19–23°C — the beaches work for sunbathing but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The resort largely closes from November through March; Capdepera town stays open year-round.

🚗 Getting Around

The 75km transfer from Palma Airport (PMI) is one of Mallorca's longest — taxis cost around €110 and take 75 minutes via the Ma-15 motorway. The TIB A51 Aerotib bus runs direct from PMI to Cala Ratjada for €15 in 90 minutes. Within the resort, the seafront promenade is fully walkable end to end and connects through to Cala Agulla via the cliff path. For day trips to the Coves d'Artà, Sineu market or Sa Calobra in the Tramuntana, hire a car from Cicar from around €25 a day. TIB bus 411 connects Cala Ratjada to Manacor and Palma in 90 minutes for €11.

  • The Capdepera Sunday market and the Wednesday Artà market both run 8am to 1pm — go before 11am for the best produce.

Late June to early September is the peak family-beach window, with 28–32°C highs and the five coves at full operation. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with cheaper hotel rates and the Capdepera fortress, lighthouse and Coves d'Artà at their best for visiting. Yes — one of Mallorca's strongest family resorts thanks to its five-cove choice. Cala Agulla's dune-backed Blue Flag bay handles toddlers and teens equally well, and Cala Gat and Son Moll are calmer alternatives. Hotel Bella Playa and Bahia de Cala Ratjada run the strongest family hotels. The Capdepera fortress, Coves d'Artà cave concerts and the Sunday market add cultural variety beyond the beach.
Direct flights to Palma Airport (PMI) take 2 hours 15 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 2 hours 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The transfer to Cala Ratjada is among Mallorca's longest at 75 minutes by taxi (€110) or 90 minutes on the TIB A51 Aerotib bus (€15).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in resort areas, with most contactless. Carry small cash for the Sunday Capdepera market, sunbed hire (€4 a set) and pedalo rental (€15 an hour). ATMs are widespread along Avinguda Cala Agulla.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Cala Ratjada is mid-priced for the east coast — broadly similar to Cala Millor and 10–15% below Cala d'Or on hotels and dining. A pint runs €4–5, a three-course dinner with wine averages €25–35pp, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills. Park Hyatt Mallorca and Cap Vermell Beach Hotel are the area's headline premium spend.
For a first visit, base near Cala Agulla at the northern edge of the resort — you wake up 100m from the dune-backed Blue Flag main beach and 10 minutes' walk from the harbour and town centre. Couples wanting the working-port atmosphere should base near the harbour and Sa Pedruscada; families wanting calmer water should choose the south-side Cala Gat or Son Moll end.
