Travel Guide

Cala d'Or is a holiday resort on the south-east coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Santanyí, 60km east of Palma and 65km from Palma Airport (PMI). The resort was master-planned in the 1930s by Ibizan architect Pep Costa Ferrer, who imposed an Ibiza-style whitewashed-cube building code that still applies today — Cala d'Or has no hotel taller than four storeys, no neon signs, and is one of the few Mallorcan resorts that genuinely looks distinct from its neighbours. The resort takes its plural name (literally "Coves of Gold") from the seven sheltered sandy calas that line its 4km coast, all linked by a clifftop walking path. UK travellers come for the polished marina lifestyle, the seven-cove beach choice, the 567-berth harbour and a quieter, more refined east-coast holiday than Magaluf or even Cala Millor.

✨ Why Visit Cala d'Or

  • Seven sheltered sandy coves within a 4km coastline — Cala Gran, Cala Esmeralda, Cala Ferrera, Caló de ses Egües, Cala Serena, Caló d'en Boira and Cala Llonga, all linked by a clifftop walking path.
  • A 1930s Ibiza-style architectural code — whitewashed-cube buildings, no high-rise hotels, no neon signs, capped at four storeys.
  • A 567-berth marina — Marina de Cala d'Or is one of Mallorca's most polished, with sailing yachts, fine-dining terraces and the resort's social heart.
  • Family-resort calm without the south-west crowds — no superclub strip, kitchens close by 11pm, average hotel guest is a family or couple in their 40s and 50s.
  • Genuine year-round opening for a small core — a steady expat community keeps the marina restaurants and a handful of bars open through the winter.
  • Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.

🌴 What Makes Cala d'Or Special

Unlike the high-rise resort strips of the south-west, Cala d'Or's 1930s whitewashed-cube architecture has been protected by municipal law since the resort's founding — there are no apartment-block towers, no neon-lit nightlife streets, and the entire centre still feels closer to a Cycladic Greek village than a 1960s package-holiday strip. Unlike Cala Millor on the east coast, where the resort identity centres on a single 1.8km bay, Cala d'Or gives you seven distinct sandy coves to choose from each day, all sheltered and all walkable. And unlike Puerto Pollensa in the north — its closest equivalent in tone — Cala d'Or has the polished 567-berth marina at its heart, plus the wild Cabrera National Park within boat reach. The combination of seven coves, refined whitewashed architecture and the marina lifestyle is unique on the east coast.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Marina de Cala d'Or — The 567-berth harbour at the heart of the resort, ringed by sailing yachts, terrace bars and the Port Petit Michelin-recommended restaurant.
  • Cala Gran — The largest of the seven coves at 130m wide, the resort's main family beach with lifeguards and watersports.
  • Cala Esmeralda — A pretty turquoise-water cove south of the marina, fronted by mid-rise apartments and the Cala Esmeralda hotel.
  • Cala Ferrera — The southernmost cove, quieter than Cala Gran and backed by the Llaut Palace and Iberostar Cala D'Or hotels.
  • Cala Llonga — A long narrow inlet to the north of the marina, lined with whitewashed villas and the Hotel Cala d'Or.
  • Avinguda de Bélgica — The main commercial spine, with restaurants, shops, banks and supermarkets.
  • Cala Figuera village (8km south) — A working fishing port with whitewashed llaüt boats, popular for half-day visits.
  • Santanyí town (10km west) — The municipal capital, with a Wednesday and Saturday morning market and traditional Mallorcan tapas restaurants.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Cala d'Or runs a more refined AI market than the south-west party resorts, with Iberostar Cala D'Or, Inturotel Cala Esmeralda, Cala D'Or Playa Apartments and AluaSoul Mallorca Resort (adults-only, just south at Cala Egos) leading the UK family rankings. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £349pp in May or October, climbing to £949pp at August half-term.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

The seven sheltered coves give Cala d'Or unusual family flexibility — pick a different beach each day, all gradually shelving and bay-protected. Hipotels Hipocampo (Cala Mondragó, 10km south), Inturotel Cala Esmeralda and the Cala D'Or Gardens apart-hotel run the strongest family inventories. Add a day at the Coves dels Hams cave concerts, the Mondragó Natural Park and Aqualand Mallorca's third site at Western Park (90 minutes west) for a varied family week.

💎 Luxury Holidays

The Llaut Palace in Cala Ferrera — adults-only, with a state-of-the-art spa and rooftop pool — is the headline luxury address. The AluaSoul Mallorca Resort (adults-only) and Hipotels Mediterráneo Park add the upper-tier marina-side options. Cap Rocat in Cala Blava (60 minutes west) and Park Hyatt Mallorca in Canyamel (50 minutes north) round out the wider east-coast luxury inventory. The yacht-charter scene from Marina de Cala d'Or is the strongest east-coast luxury experience.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Cala d'Or carries solid late-availability stock outside the August peak. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into October — discounts of 20–25% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on Iberostar, Inturotel and Hipotels properties. Most hotels close from late October to early April; a small core of marina-side restaurants and the Iberostar Cala D'Or stay open year-round.

📅 Best Time to Visit Cala d'Or

Cala d'Or runs as a summer-season family resort, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the seven coves at their busiest. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C, with cheaper rates and the clifftop Camí de Ronda walking path at its best. April and October still deliver 19–23°C — the calas work for sunbathing but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The marina core stays open year-round; most beach hotels close November to March.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: Inturotel Cala Esmeralda, Cala D'Or Gardens (apart-hotel), Hipotels Mediterráneo
  • Couples: Llaut Palace (adults-only, Cala Ferrera), AluaSoul Mallorca Resort (adults-only, Cala Egos)
  • Luxury travellers: Llaut Palace, Iberostar Cala D'Or, Park Hyatt Mallorca (50km north at Canyamel)
  • Budget travellers: Cala D'Or Playa Apartments, self-catering apartments around Avinguda de Bélgica
  • Sailors & marina lovers: Hotel Pinos Playa, Iberostar Cala D'Or — both within 5 minutes of the marina basin

🚗 Getting Around

The 65km transfer from Palma Airport (PMI) is among Mallorca's longer ones — taxis cost around €95 and take 60 minutes via the Ma-19 motorway. The TIB A52 Aerotib bus runs direct from PMI to Cala d'Or for €15 in 90 minutes. Within the resort, the seven coves are linked by the 4km clifftop Camí de Ronda walking path. For day trips to Es Trenc, Mondragó Natural Park or the Coves dels Hams, hire a car from Cicar from around €25 a day. TIB bus 501 connects Cala d'Or to Palma in 80 minutes for €10.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Mallorca's Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills (May to October).
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • The Wednesday and Saturday morning markets in Santanyí town (10km west) run 8am to 1.30pm — go before 11am for the best produce.
  • Cala Mondragó Natural Park has a €6 parking fee; arrive before 10am in summer to secure a space.
  • Cabrera National Park boat-trip permits are limited to 200 visitors a day in summer — book at least a week ahead.
  • The clifftop Camí de Ronda walk has uneven sections — wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops.
  • The Coves dels Hams (35km north at Porto Cristo) are smaller and quieter than the better-known Coves del Drac — both worth a visit if you have two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Late June to early September is the peak family-beach window, with 28–32°C highs and the seven coves at full operation. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with cheaper hotel rates and the Camí de Ronda clifftop walk at its best. The marina core stays open year-round; most beach hotels close November to March.
Yes — particularly for families wanting a quieter alternative to Magaluf or Alcúdia. The seven sheltered sandy coves all gradually shelve into bay-protected water, and Cala Gran's 130m main beach has lifeguards in summer. Inturotel Cala Esmeralda and the Cala D'Or Gardens apart-hotel run strong family inventories. There are no waterparks in the immediate resort — head north to Aqualand Western Park or pair with day trips to Mondragó Natural Park.
Direct flights to Palma Airport (PMI) take 2 hours 15 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 2 hours 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The transfer to Cala d'Or is 60 minutes by taxi (€95) or 90 minutes on the TIB A52 Aerotib bus (€15).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in resort areas, with most contactless. Carry small cash for the Wednesday and Saturday Santanyí markets, sunbed hire (€4 a set) and pedalo rental (€15 an hour). ATMs are widespread along Avinguda de Bélgica.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Cala d'Or is mid-priced for the east coast — broadly 10–15% above Cala Millor on hotels and dining, and noticeably below the Marbella-style luxury strips. A pint runs €4.50–5.50, a three-course dinner with wine averages €30–45pp, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night. The marina-side terraces and Port Petit are the headline premium spend.
For a first visit, base near Cala Gran or the Marina de Cala d'Or — you wake up 100m from the largest of the seven coves and the harbour terraces, with the Camí de Ronda clifftop path at the door. Couples wanting a quieter base should consider Cala Ferrera or Cala Esmeralda; sailing-led travellers should look at the apartment buildings directly above the marina basin.
