Travel Guide

C’an Picafort is a holiday resort on the southern shore of the Bay of Alcúdia, on the north-east coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Santa Margalida. It sits 50km north of Palma, 50km from Palma Airport (PMI), and 6km south of Port d'Alcúdia along a continuous 10km arc of sand. Originally a 19th-century summer-house settlement for the inland farmers of Santa Margalida, the resort grew into one of Mallorca's largest mid-market family destinations during the 1970s and 1980s. Today it sits as the more affordable, slightly quieter neighbour to Alcúdia and Playa de Muro on the same bay — same gradually-shelving Blue Flag water, same flat segregated cycling network, but typically 10–15% cheaper on hotels. UK travellers come for the no-frills value, the dune-backed beach (rare on Mallorca's developed coastline) and the access to S'Albufera, the Talayotic Son Real necropolis and the Tramuntana mountains beyond.

✨ Why Visit Can Picafort

  • A 4km Blue Flag beach backed by protected dunes — one of the few Mallorcan resort beaches still fronted by a natural dune system rather than apartment blocks.
  • Mallorca's most extensive segregated cycle network — flat coastal lanes link Can Picafort north to Port d'Alcúdia and on to the S'Albufera wetlands.
  • The Necròpolis de Son Real on the doorstep — a Talayotic Bronze Age burial site directly on the coastal cliffs, free to visit and unique on the island.
  • Genuine value for the bay — typically 10–15% cheaper on hotels than neighbouring Alcúdia and Playa de Muro for the same beach.
  • A 50-minute airport transfer — quicker than Alcúdia or Cala Millor, via the Ma-13 motorway.
  • Direct UK flights from over 20 airports — easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Ryanair and British Airways from Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, 2hr 15min from London.

🌴 What Makes Can Picafort Special

Unlike its better-known neighbour Alcúdia 6km north, Can Picafort sits firmly in the value-family bracket — the resort has no five-star inventory, no Roman ruins, and a smaller cluster of restaurants. What it offers instead is genuine affordability on the same Bay of Alcúdia, the same gradually-shelving water and the same segregated cycle network, with the unusual bonus of a protected dune-backed beach. Unlike Cala Millor or Cala d'Or on the east coast, Can Picafort's bay is wider, calmer and more sheltered, with no rocky outcrops to navigate. And unlike Magaluf or Santa Ponsa, the resort runs almost entirely on family clientele — there is no nightlife strip, no superclub, kitchens close by 11pm. For UK families wanting a no-frills beach week with serious cycling, birdwatching and Bronze Age history within reach, Can Picafort delivers the strongest value on the bay.

📍 Key Areas to Explore

  • Can Picafort centre — The main resort spine along Avinguda Colom, with restaurants, supermarkets and the bus station.
  • Playa de Can Picafort (main beach) — The 4km Blue Flag central stretch with sunbed hire, lifeguards and the segregated cycle path running parallel.
  • Son Baulo — The southern end of the resort beach, quieter and pine-fringed, with the Son Baulo apartment cluster and the Necròpolis de Son Real beyond.
  • Son Serra de Marina (5km south) — A quieter residential resort with a smaller beach and the surfer-friendly southern point of the bay.
  • Santa Margalida town (8km inland) — The municipal capital, with the Tuesday market and traditional Mallorcan tapas restaurants.
  • S'Albufera Natural Park (4km north) — The 1,700-hectare wetland reserve, accessible via the segregated cycle lane.
  • Port d'Alcúdia (6km north) — The next-door resort with a deeper restaurant and shopping offer, and the marina for boat trips to Cap de Formentor.

🏨 All-Inclusive Holidays

Can Picafort runs one of Mallorca's strongest value AI markets, with JS Horitzó, JS Sol de Can Picafort, Hipotels Bahía Grande and Grupotel Farrutx leading the UK family rankings. Hotel Caribe and Allsun Hotel Eden Playa add the upper-tier family AI options. Shoulder-season weeks with UK flights typically open from £279pp in May or October, climbing to £849pp at August half-term — among the cheapest family-AI options on the bay.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Holidays

This is exactly what Can Picafort was built for. The 4km gradually-shelving Blue Flag bay has lifeguards in summer, the segregated cycle network is buggy-friendly, and the bay-protected calm water suits even the youngest swimmers. JS Sol de Can Picafort, Hipotels Bahía Grande and Grupotel Farrutx run the strongest family inventories. Pair with HiPark Aquapark (10 minutes north in Port d'Alcúdia) and the Sa Coma Safari Park (45 minutes south) for a full family week.

💎 Luxury Holidays

True five-star inventory clusters in next-door Alcúdia and Playa de Muro rather than Can Picafort itself. Zafiro Palace Alcúdia (10 minutes north, swim-up suites and rooftop spa) is the closest luxury option, with Iberostar Selection Albufera Playa at the Playa de Muro end. Park Hyatt Mallorca in Canyamel (45 minutes south) and Hotel Formentor, a Royal Hideaway Hotel on the Formentor peninsula (40 minutes north) are the area's flagship five-stars. Within Can Picafort itself, Hotel Caribe is the leading mid-tier choice.

⏰ Last-Minute Deals

Can Picafort carries the strongest late-availability stock on the Bay of Alcúdia, particularly outside July and August. The strongest discounts surface in mid-May to early June and from mid-September into late October — discounts of 25–30% inside three weeks of departure are realistic on JS, Grupotel and Hipotels properties. Most hotels close from late October to early April; the resort effectively shuts down in winter except for a small core of restaurants.

📅 Best Time to Visit Can Picafort

Can Picafort runs as a summer-season family resort, with most hotels open from late April to early November. Peak season is late June to early September, with daytime highs of 28–32°C, sea temperatures of 23–26°C, and the bay at its busiest. May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C, with cheaper hotel rates and the cycling network at its best. April and October still deliver 19–23°C — the dune-backed beach works for sunbathing but the sea drops below comfortable swimming temperatures (17–19°C). The resort largely closes from November to March.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • Families: JS Sol de Can Picafort, Hipotels Bahía Grande, Grupotel Farrutx
  • Couples: JS Horitzó (adults-only beachfront), Hotel Caribe
  • Luxury travellers: Zafiro Palace Alcúdia (10 minutes north), Iberostar Selection Albufera Playa
  • Budget travellers: Allsun Hotel Eden Playa, JS Horitzó, self-catering apartments around Avinguda Colom
  • Cyclists & walkers: Allsun Hotel Eden Playa, Grupotel Farrutx (both with bike storage)

🚗 Getting Around

The 50km transfer from Palma Airport (PMI) takes 50 minutes by taxi (around €80) via the Ma-13 motorway. The TIB A41 Aerotib bus runs direct from PMI to Can Picafort for €15 in 80 minutes. Within the resort, the seafront promenade is fully walkable end to end, and the segregated cycle network is the most extensive on Mallorca — flat, signposted and connecting through to Port d'Alcúdia and the S'Albufera wetlands. For day trips to the Tramuntana mountains, Sineu market or Cap de Formentor, hire a car from Cicar from around €25 a day. TIB bus 320 connects Can Picafort to Sineu in 35 minutes for €5.

💡 Travel Tips

  • The Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK year-round (Central European Time).
  • IVA at 21% applies — alcohol and electronics aren't notably cheaper than the UK.
  • Mallorca's Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills (May to October).
  • Plug type is European C/F at 230V — bring a UK adapter.
  • Tap water is technically safe but heavily mineralised; locals drink bottled.
  • The Tuesday Santa Margalida market and Wednesday Sineu market both run 8am to 1pm — go before 11am for the best produce.
  • The Necròpolis de Son Real has no facilities — bring water and sun cover before walking out from the car park.
  • Cycle the segregated lane to S'Albufera early in the day — afternoon trade winds make the return trip harder.
  • The S'Albufera Natural Park entry is free but requires a permit from the Sa Roca centre — collect on arrival, before 9am for the best birdlife.
  • Most Can Picafort restaurants close November to March — head to Port d'Alcúdia or Santa Margalida for year-round dining.

May, June and September are the value-strong shoulder months at 23–27°C with cheaper hotel rates and the cycling network and S'Albufera wetlands at their best. Yes — and notably good value compared to its neighbours. The 4km gradually-shelving Blue Flag bay has lifeguards in summer, the segregated cycle network is buggy-friendly end-to-end, and the bay-protected calm water suits even toddlers. JS Sol de Can Picafort, Hipotels Bahía Grande and Grupotel Farrutx run the strongest family hotels. HiPark Aquapark and Sa Coma Safari Park are within easy day-trip range.
Direct flights to Palma Airport (PMI) take 2 hours 15 minutes from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, rising to 2 hours 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The transfer to Can Picafort is 50 minutes by taxi (€80) or 80 minutes on the TIB A41 Aerotib bus (€15).
The euro (€). Cards are accepted everywhere in resort areas, with most contactless. Carry small cash for the Tuesday Santa Margalida market, sunbed hire (€4 a set) and pedalo rental (€15 an hour). ATMs are widespread along Avinguda Colom.
UK passport holders need no visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Once the EU ETIAS scheme launches, UK visitors will need an online travel authorisation costing €7, valid for three years across the Schengen Area.
Can Picafort is one of the cheapest of Mallorca's main family resorts — typically 10–15% below Alcúdia and Playa de Muro on the same bay. A pint runs €4–4.50, a three-course dinner with wine averages €25–30pp, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax adds €1–4pp per night to hotel bills. All-inclusive packages from £279pp are the strongest family value on the Bay of Alcúdia.
For a first visit, base near the central seafront promenade and Avinguda Colom — you wake up 100m from the dune-backed bay, the bus stops to Sineu and Port d'Alcúdia, and the resort's main restaurants. Couples wanting more pine-backed atmosphere should consider the quieter Son Baulo end at the south of the beach.
